Jean-Marc Vallée to Direct Upcoming HBO Limited Series 'Gorilla and the Bird'

Jean-Marc Vallée is back in business at HBO. The Emmy-winning director of Big Little Lies - who also helmed every episode of Sharp Objects - has signed on to direct and executive produce the new original limited series Gorilla and the Bird. His attachment has triggered a production commitment from HBO.

Based on the memoir by Zack McDermott, the series follows Zack, a public defender with the Legal Aid Society of New York who suffers a sudden psychotic break that takes him on a harrowing journey of delusions and antisocial behavior, resulting in his arrest and commitment to Bellevue. As he fights to regain his sanity, Zack (the Gorilla) turns to the only person who didn't give up on him - his mother (the Bird).

Bryan Sipe developed the series and will serve as showrunner. Sipe and Vallée will executive produce with Channing Tatum, Nathan Rose, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan, Robin Schwartz, Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf. McDermott will serve as a co-executive producer. The series is a co-production between HBO and Big Beach.
