HBO Gives Series Order to Limited Series 'The Son' Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

HBO has today given a series order to the original limited series The Son starring and executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Nocturnal Animals).

Based on the novel by Jo Nesbø, the drama is a tale of vengeance set amid Oslo's brutal hierarchy of corruption. Gyllenhaal will star as Sonny Lofthus, an escaped convict and opioid addict who can't recall his past, now on the run from the law and toward an unknown truth.

Lenore Zion will serve as showrunner, with Denis Villeneuve set to direct the premiere. They will executive produce with Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, Riva Marker, Athena Wickham, David Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, Michel Litvak, Svetlana Metkina, Jo Nesbø and Niclas Salomonsson. Warner Bros. Television, Nine Stories Productions, Kilter Films and Bold Films will produce.

"Jonah and Lisa are a formidable creative force and we are excited to collaborate with them again, alongside the brilliant Lenore, to adapt Jo Nesbø's novel," said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming. "Denis is a master at weaving visually exquisite and unique narratives, Jake is a gifted actor and producer whose work often traverses provocative and compelling terrain, and of course, he and Denis have collaborated brilliantly in the past. We are beyond excited to see how this powerhouse team tackles this exceptional work."
