This past week saw the finales of Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea? on NBC. While Chelsea is doomed for cancellation, the same is not true for Whitney. Yes, critics still heavily pan this show but throughout the first part of 2012 it was frequently the second most-watched comedy on NBC (behind only The Office) and its finale posted the second best comedy numbers for the week - besting 30 Rock and Up All Night.

FOX Diagnosis: 'Kitchen Nightmares' Ends Its Season Softly in the Ratings
This week on FOX two series aired their finales for the season - Kitchen Nightmares and Alcatraz. Both of them were very lowly rated. The second hour of Alcatraz posted a new ratings low for the series while Kitchen Nightmares posted its second lowest numbers of this cycle. FOX already green-lit another production cycle for Kitchen Nightmares but do these low ratings mean the end for Alcatraz?

The CW Diagnosis: Is 'Nikita' Doomed Since It's Hitting 0.4s?
Odds are that by May the network will cancel Ringer and either Hart of Dixie or Nikita (or all three given a good pilot season which is also likely). With Nikita having hit a 0.4 twice now is it now more likely to be the one to get the ax. After Ringer hit a 0.4 many listed it as certain to be cancelled, so will the same apply to Nikita?

CBS Diagnosis: Should 'CSI: Miami' & 'CSI: NY' Both Be Cancelled?
This was quite a quiet week for CBS as most shows either stayed even in their ratings or only saw a tenth or two fluctuations in one direction. So instead I'll continue to talk about their big renewal announcement from a week ago. Word is that CBS has some great scripts in pilot development right now. So does that mean in order to accommodate them all that the network would have to cancel all of the shows that they haven't renewed yet?
ABC Diagnosis: Despite Ratings Increase, 'Body of Proof' Still Likely to be Cancelled
The network's "biggest" news story this week concerning ratings was the fact that on Tuesday night Body of Proof had a 50% growth and posted its best numbers since its season premiere. Most people will say that only happened due to Dancing with the Stars being a better lead-in than The River was. While that statement is true and this increase impressive, odds are that Body of Proof will still be cancelled by May.

NBC Diagnosis: 'Smash' is Renewed While 'Bent' is DOA
In what was a surprise to virtually no one, NBC decided this week to renew Smash, their most successful drama this season, for a second season. However, later in the day it was also announced that the new season would not feature creator Theresa Rebeck as the creative showrunner. The week also featured the premiere of new comedy Bent which aired two episodes - each with very dismal ratings.

FOX Diagnosis: 'New Girl' & 'Fringe' Both Hit Ratings Lows
It was yet another down week for FOX - as several shows actually saw series lows in the ratings. The week's new episodes of New Girl, Fringe, House and I Hate My Teenage Daughter posted new lows in the ratings. That was also the final nail in the coffin for I Hate My Teenage Daughter as the network decided to pull it in favor of Raising Hope repeats in the Tuesday night comedy block.
The CW Diagnosis: 'Supernatural' Down When Every Other Show Was Up
As has been a recurring theme from The CW lately, this week was rather slow with news surrounding their programs. In contrast to another recent trend though, every show except Supernatural that aired this week was up or even in their ratings since their previous airings.

CBS Diagnosis: Finale Dates Set as the Network is Filled with Basketball Coverage
The biggest news from the network continues to be its coverage of the current NCAA Basketball Tournament this week. Besides that though, CBS announced their finale dates for all of the programming and are giving four of their series super-sized airings to conclude their seasons - 2 Broke Girls, How I Met Your Mother, NCIS: LA and Criminal Minds.
ABC Diagnosis: Does 'Private Practice's Future Depend on the Success of 'Scandal'?
This was a big down week in the ratings for ABC. The newest season of Dancing with the Stars posted its lowest premiere numbers while GCB, Happy Endings, Last Man Standing and Missing all saw severe decreases. Despite this news a rumor has been going around that the network is on the verge of announcing renewals for several of their well-performing series. Nothing has been made officially so we will just have to wait and see.

Ratings: March 18 - March 23, 2012

NBC Diagnosis: 'Community' Strong in Return & Gets Syndication Deal
This past Thursday marked the highly anticipated return of beloved comedy Community to NBC's Thursday comedy lineup. Without competition from ratings-juggernaut The Big Bang Theory, Community saw a season high rating of 2.2. Also in good news for this show, Comedy Central signed a syndication deal to start airing episodes of Community beginning in the fall of 2013 which increases its fourth season renewal prospects.

FOX Diagnosis: 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' Basically Canceled in New Schedule Change
In what has become common new this season, FOX has announced another change it is making to its spring schedule. I Hate My Teenage Daughter, which is now a part of the two hour Tuesday block, was originally planned to air after 90-minute episodes of American Idol on Wednesdays in April. But now, American Idol will stay at two hours while I Hate My Teenage Daughter will be moved to summer. This summer move likely spells out cancellation for this comedy.
The CW Diagnosis: Should 'Gossip Girl' Get an Abbreviated Final Season?
This week saw the return of the Thursday and Friday night programs on The CW. Those programs returned down after taking several weeks off. Also this week, a story broke that the network was considering renewing Gossip Girl for an abbreviated season (much like One Tree Hill this year). The show's ratings should have it canceled but due to the poor state of the overall network I could see this proposal come to fruition.

ABC Diagnosis: 'The Bachelor' Marks its Lowest Rated Finale Ever
This week saw the finale of The Bachelor and it did see a nice increase from its average ratings this season but its 2.9 (and subsequent 3.3 for the After the Final Rose special) was the lowest rated in its series run. Also in news this week, The Middle received a syndication deal from the Hallmark Channel which would start airing episodes in March of 2014.
Ratings: March 11 - March 16, 2012
This week marked the start of Daylight Savings Time which is usually a depressing time for television ratings as most people would rather spend more time outside since there's light out later. Due to that fact, many shows were down this past week but surprisingly the average rating was even with last week's.

NBC Diagnosis: Are 'Whitney' & 'Are You There, Chelsea?' Locks for Cancellation?
Until the numbers for Friday night came in, NBC was having a very good week with all of its programming either going up or staying even in the ratings. It may just be because the other networks were mostly in repeats but it sure does look good for NBC. The only big exception to this was Awake which saw the typical second episode ratings loss.

FOX Diagnosis: How Does 'Terra Nova's Cancellation Affect Other Programs' Odds?
Late Monday night, news finally broke that FOX has decided not to renew Terra Nova for a second season. How does this announcement, coupled with the fact that House is ending in May, affect the renewal chances of other programs on the network - mostly the dramas. The numbers for Bones, Alcatraz, and The Finder all have them as being on the bubble for renewal. Most likely Bones will return in the fall while Alcatraz and The Finder will join Terra Nova in cancellation.
The CW Diagnosis: Which of 'Nikita,' 'Gossip Girl' & 'Hart of Dixie' Will Be Canceled?
It was yet another slow news week for The CW as the network only aired four hours of original programming. Because of that fact, I will instead a renewal question. One Tree Hill is concluding this year and Ringer will most likely be canceled. So to make room for new series which of these three will also be canceled - Nikita, Gossip Girl and Hart of Dixie? The network probably will can at least two of them but if have a great developmental season, I could see all three going.

CBS Diagnosis: Is a Move to Friday Nights in the Future for 'The Mentalist'?
This week the network tried some creative scheduling tests and aired a new episode of The Mentalist on Friday night. The show has been doing well on Thursdays but the network may be planning on having a 2 hour comedy block on Thursdays starting this fall. They would most likely keep Person of Interest on the night which in turn would mean The Mentalist would have to move. In my opinion, it could remain a stable hit on either Sunday or Friday night if that is what the network is planning on doing.

ABC Diagnosis: 'Happy Endings' Plummets With No 'Modern Family' Lead-in
Except for strong growth from Once Upon a Time and Desperate Housewives, the network's programs were either in repeats or saw drops in the ratings. New dramedy GCB premiered on Sunday to a 2.2 which was higher than the Pan Am finale but is far from the numbers the network would love to see. Happy Endings was also the only new episode in the Wednesday comedy block and its ratings fell drastically subsequently.

Ratings: March 4 - March 9, 2012
The weekly averages were drastically down since this week contained no big high-viewership event like The Academy Awards last week. NBC Diagnosis: 'Awake' Premiered Well but Has No Room for Ratings Loss
Unlike its broadcast competitors, NBC aired original programming every night this past week. Despite that fact though, Grimm and Who Do You Think You? were the only programs to show significant growth. The CW Diagnosis: 'Ringer' is as Good as Dead
It was a terrible week ratings-wise for The CW this past week. First off, their successful Thursday and Friday night lineups were in repeats. On Monday, Gossip Girl and Hart of Dixie stayed at series lows (0.5). Ringer once again pathetically fell to a 0.4. CBS Diagnosis: 'A Gifted Man' Goes Out High, Still Unlikely to Return
It was yet another week of downward ratings for CBS. Most programs showed huge drops in their ratings this week with the one exception of NCIS: LA which rose by four tenths. Undercover Boss and A Gifted Man also grew but the latter's growth in its season finale will most likely not save it from cancellation.
ABC Diagnosis: 'Revenge' Steady Before 5 Week Hiatus
It was a slow news week for ABC. Yes, they did air The 84th Academy Awards on Sunday, which saw a small uptick, but the rest of the week wasn't filled with many buzz-worthy moments. This week had three of my reviewed series airing fresh episodes - Smash returned to greatness with guest star Nick Jonas, Law & Order: SVU went out softly in its winter finale, and Blue Bloods had fun with a romance for Tom Selleck's character. Three series have new episodes this upcoming week so hopefully I'll be able to post extensive reviews of each of them. Until then, enjoy!
