FOX Renews 'Bones'; Cancels 'The Following' & 'Backstrom'

FOX has just renewed long-running procedural Bones for its eleventh season, after 20th Century Fox Television closed new deals with stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz.

UPDATE - The network has just announced that both The Following and Backstrom have been cancelled.

Season 11 of Bones will have a change behind-the-scenes though, with Jonathan Collier and Michael Peterson stepping in as new co-showrunners. Stephen Nathan is departing showrunning duties after only one season on the job. However, Nathan will remain an executive produce alongside series creator Hart Hanson, Collier, Peterson, Barry Josephson and Randy Zisk.

The Bones renewal means the veteran procedural will join a 2015-16 drama lineup that includes Empire, Gotham, Sleepy Hollow, new drama Rosewood and the limited series revival of The X-Files.

Meanwhile, The Following cancellations comes after the third season pulled in series low numbers in its initial airings. The show continued to be a strong performer in DVR playback numbers. It consistently ranked as one of the highest gainers percentage wise every week. And yet, those figures weren't enough to secure the dark thriller another limited run on the network.

The cancellation for Backstrom isn't all that surprising considering it has been pulling in numbers under a 1.0 rating for the majority of its season.

The only show still technically in limbo at the moment at FOX is Weird Loners.
