Development News - Hayley Atwell Books Lead on 'Conviction'; Candice Bergen to Topline 'Pearl'; Plus 2 More Updates!

Development News - February 10, 2016

ABC's Conviction & Pearl; FOX's Chad: An American Boy; and NBC's The Trail.

NBC's THE TRAIL
  • Tony nominee Steven Boyer (Hand to God) has been cast on the comedy pilot written by Jeff Astrof and Matt Miller. He will play Dwayne, Simon's loyal lead investigator. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, Dwayne's dream is to take a bullet for Josh - hopefully not from his own gun.
ABC's CONVICTION
  • Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell has booked he lead role on the drama pilot written by Liz Friedman. She will play Carter Morrison, the brilliant but ne'er-do-well daughter of a former president, who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles' newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. Along with her team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts, she works to examine cases where there's credible suspicion that the wrong person may have been convicted of a crime. Her casting is in first position to Agent Carter, which has been very modestly rated in its second season. Should both shows be picked up for next season though, ABC is willing to create a production schedule that would allow her to do both.
ABC's PEARL
  • Murphy Brown star Candice Bergen is plotting a return to broadcast television with the lead role on the comedy pilot written by Andrew Reich. Additionally, Jim Field Smith has signed on to direct. Bergen will play Pearl, a larger-than-life family matriarch who finds out she has cancer and becomes intent on controlling and orchestrating every aspect of her family's life before she dies.
FOX's CHAD: AN AMERICAN BOY
  • FOX has given a pilot order to single camera comedy Chad: An American Boy written by and starring Nasim Pedrad (Saturday Night Live, Scream Queens). Pedrad wrote the pilot with Rob Rosell. They will executive produce with Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and pilot director Jason Winer. 20th Century Fox Television and 3 Arts Entertainment will produce. The project stars Pedrad as a 14-year-old boy in the throes of adolescence who is tasked with being the man of the house, which leaves him with all the responsibilities of being an adult without any of the perks.
