Development News - HBO and Amazon Order Pilots from Adam McKay, Kathryn Bigelow, Amy Sherman-Palladino & More!

Amazon's Carnival Row, The Legend of Master Legend, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Strange New Things & Tropicana; and HBO's Mogadishu, Minnesota & Succession.




HBO's SUCCESSION
  • The premium cable network has given a pilot order to drama Succession written by Jesse Armstrong. He will executive produce with Will Ferrell, Frank Rich, Kevin Messick and director Adam McKay. The project follows the saga of a fictional, American global-media family that is not only rich and powerful but also powerfully dysfunctional. The drama will explore family loyalty, international business and the perils of power in the 21st century.
HBO's MOGADISHU, MINNESOTA
  • The network has also ordered a pilot for drama Mogadishu, Minnesota written and to be directed by K'naan Warsame. He will executive produce with Kathryn Bigelow and Carolyn Strauss. The project is a family drama that grapples with what it means to be American among the Somalis of Minneapolis.
AMAZON's CARNIVAL ROW
  • The streaming service has also ordered a number of pilots today. First up is drama Carnival Row written by Rene Echeverria. He will executive produce with Guillermo del Toro, Travis Beacham and Gary Ungar. Amazon Studios and Legendary Television produce. The project is set in the future in a city called the Burgue, which looks a lot like 18th century London. It is inhabited by humans and other creatures, and a serial killer is on the loose.
AMAZON's THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
  • The next pilot order at Amazon is dramedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel written by Amy Sherman-Palladino. Amazon Studios produces. The project is about a 1950s housewife who decides to be one of the first female standup comics.
AMAZON's TROPICANA
  • Moving on, drama Tropicana has also been ordered to pilot today at Amazon. The pilot is written by Josh Goldin and Rachel Abramowitz, who executive produce with Andrea Simon. Amazon Studios produces. Set in pre-revolutionary Cuba, the project explores the intersection of entertainers, the mob, Batista loyalists, Castro revolutionaries and the American CIA in and around the world of The Tropicana nightclub.
AMAZON's THE LEGEND OF MASTER LEGEND
  • The sole half-hour comedy being ordered to pilot at Amazon today is for The Legend of Master Legend written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. They executive produce with Joshuah Bearman. Amazon Studios produces. Based on Bearman's Rolling Stone article about real-life superheroes, the project centers on Master Legend and his sidekick, the Ace.
AMAZON's STRANGE NEW THINGS
  • And finally, Amazon has ordered a pilot for drama Strange New Things written by Matt Charman, with Kevin MacDonald set to direct. They executive produce with Andy Harries and Brian Eno has signed on as musical supervisor. Amazon Studios and Left Bank Pictures will produce. An adaptation of Michel Faber's novel The Book of Strange New Things, the project revolves around Peter Leigh, an English pastor who embarks on the journey of a lifetime into deep space that takes him light years away from his beloved wife, Bea. The drama is an epic with a heat-wrenching love story of a husband and wife with the universe between them.
