Showtime Confirms 'Penny Dreadful' Aired Its Series Finale Last Night

Last night's Season 3 finale of Showtime's Penny Dreadful ended with the words "The End" coming across the screen. And now, the premium cable network has confirmed that the episode really was the final one for the drama.

In the series finale, Eva Green's long-suffering and tortured heroine, Vanessa Ives, made the ultimate sacrifice by asking Josh Hartnett's Ethan Chandler to kill her to restore peace and order to the world. My full thoughts on what happened in the finale can be read here.

The decision to end the critically acclaimed drama was made entirely by series creator John Logan, who felt that Vanessa Ives' story had reached its conclusion and the show was ultimately about her struggle with faith in this crazy and twisted world of monsters and demons.

Logan went into the third season knowing that it would be the final season of the show. Showtime President David Nevins supported that decision and allowed Logan to wrap the series the way he wanted to. They agreed not to announce this was the final season in order for the twists of the finale to be truly surprising and emotional for the audience.

The drama aired 27 episodes across three seasons.
