Showtime Cancels 'Masters of Sex' After 4 Seasons

Showtime has decided to end its original drama series Masters of Sex after four seasons, it was announced today. The period drama aired its final episode on November 13, 2016.

Based on Thomas Maier's biography of sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the drama ended its run in the 1970s with Masters and Johnson actually getting married. Sources say Showtime and the producers decided that the ending was a satisfying enough conclusion and that a fifth season wasn't necessary.

In its fourth season, the drama starred Michael Sheen, Lizzy Caplan, Caitlin Fitzgerald and Annaleigh Ashford.

Michelle Ashford created the series. She served as executive produce with Amy Lippman, Judith Verno, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly. Showtime produced in association with Sony Pictures Television, Timberman/Beverly Productions and Round Two Productions.

The fourth season of the drama averaged less than 800,000 total viewers when factoring in three days of delayed returns.
