Amazon Cancels 'Z: The Beginning of Everything' - Despite Previous Season 2 Renewal

In a surprising move, Amazon has decided to reverse course and cancel its original series Z: The Beginning of Everything after one season - despite ordering a second season several months ago.

The second season of the show was already deep into preproduction. Karl Gajdusek (Last Resort, Stranger Things) joined the series as showrunner for the second season just a few weeks ago, with the writers' room being busy ever since. But now, Amazon has decided to cut its loses.

The second season renewal was always a bit surprising. Even though Christina Ricci led the cast, the show failed to generate any buzz at all. Moreover, the few reviews the first season did get were pretty average to mediocre. Its renewal was initially seen as a way for Amazon to address criticize of favoring white male showrunners with its original scripted series.

The drama starred Christina Ricci, David Hoflin and David Strathairn.

Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin created the series. They executive produced with Ricci, Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler. Amazon Studios and Sugar Mama Productions produced.
