Casting News - Michael Shannon Boards 'The Little Drummer Girl'; Cherry Jones Joins 'The Handmaid's Tale'; Plus 4 More Updates!

ABC's Grey's Anatomy; AMC's The Little Drummer Girl; FOX's Gotham; Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale; and Netflix's Daredevil & She's Gotta Have It.

  • Oscar nominee Michael Shannon will co-star opposite Florence Pugh and Alexander Skarsgård on the upcoming miniseries. He received Academy Award nominations for Revolutionary Road and Nocturnal Animals. He can currently be seen in The Shape of Water as well as Paramount miniseries Waco.
  • The miniseries sees a brilliant young actress, Charlie (Pugh), strike up an acquaintance with an intriguing stranger while on holiday in Greece, but it rapidly becomes apparent that his intentions are far from romantic. The man is Becker (Skarsgård), an Israeli intelligence officer who entangles her in a complex and high stakes plot orchestrated by Israeli Spymaster Kurtz (Shannon).
  • Emmy winner Cherry Jones will appear in the drama's upcoming second season. She won an Emmy for her supporting role on FOX's 24. She has recently recurred on Amazon's Transparent and ABC's American Crime.
  • She will play Holly, June's (Elisabeth Moss) mother, an outspoken feminist and a judgmental but loving mother. She will appear in the third episode of the season. It's currently unclear if she'll return for additional episodes in the season.
  • Justin Bruening is set to reprise his role as Matthew Taylor, April's (Sarah Drew) ex-fiancé, in an upcoming episode of the drama's fourteenth season. He appeared on the drama throughout its ninth and tenth seasons, until April ran away on their wedding day to be with Jackson (Jesse Williams).
  • No details were immediately released about what brings the character and when. However, showrunner Krista Vernoff teases that, "Matthew Taylor will pay a visit to Grey Sloan and the impact of this return will see April reevaluating some of the decisions she has made in her life."
  • Joanne Whalley has joined the cast of the drama's upcoming third season as a new series regular. She has recently appeared in PBS' Wolf Hall, NBC's A.D.: The Bible Continues and Starz's The White Princess.
  • She will play Sister Maggie, a steel-spined nun who nurses Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) back to full strength.
  • David W. Thompson has been tapped to replace Charlie Tahan in the role of infamous psychopath Scarecrow on the drama's fourth season. Tahan played the role in four episodes of the drama. He was unable to return for a larger presence due to his series regular commitment on Netflix's Ozark.
  • Today, the network also announced that the drama will resume its fourth season on Thursday, March 1 at 8/7c. leading into the return of Showtime at the Apollo.
  • After recurring throughout the first season, Chyna Layne has been promoted to series regular for the comedy's upcoming second season. She plays Shemekka Epps, a friend of Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise).
