Showtime Renews 'The Chi'; Cancels 'Dice'

After airing only four episodes, Showtime has renewed its original drama series The Chi for a second season. Production will resume in Chicago later this season.

The premium cable channel also canceled its original comedy series Dice after two seasons today.

The Chi stars Jason Mitchell, Jacob Latimore, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Alex Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Armando Riesco and Tiffany Boone.

Lena Waithe created the drama. She executive produces with Common, Elwood Reid, Aaron Kaplan and Rick Famuyiwa. Today's renewal announcement also comes with Ayanna Floyd Davis (Empire) joining the second season as executive producer and showrunner. Fox 21 Television Studios and Kapital Entertainment produce.

"From viewers and critics alike, the response to The Chi has been so enthusiastic from the very start that our decision to renew the series was an easy one," said Gary Levine, President of Programming, Showtime Networks. "We love the vibrant characters and the nuanced world that Lena has created. Her vision for The Chi has clearly struck a chord, and we know she has many more moving, personal and resonant stories to tell about her beloved hometown."

Dice starred Andrew Dice Clay, Kevin Corrigan and Natasha Leggero.

Scot Armstrong created the comedy. He executive produces with Clay, Bruce Rubenstein, Brian Gatewood, Alexandro Tanaka, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst. Fox 21 Television Studios and Olé Productions produced.

The seven episode second season wrapped its run in October 2017. It averaged only 146,000 total viewers.
