ABC Orders 13 Episodes of 1990s-Set 'The Goldbergs' Spinoff Starring Tim Meadows, Bryan Callen and AJ Michalka

A year after the project was first in consideration at the network, ABC has given a series order to an untitled spinoff of the original comedy series The Goldbergs. The order is for 13 episodes, which will air during the 2018-19 broadcast season. Today's pickup also comes with changes to the cast and premise of the series.

Set in 1990-something, the comedy follows the teachers of William Penn Academy - led by Principal Glascott (Tim Meadows), Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen) and Lainey Lewis (AJ Michalka) - who, despite their eccentricities and crazy personal lives, are heroes to their students.

Meadows, Callen and Michalka are the only talented currently attached to the new series. The original pilot also starred Nia Long, Rachel Crow and Summer Parker. They will not be continuing with the new format.

Meadows, Callen and Michalka have all been recurring on the original series since the first season, with Michalka being upgraded to a series regular for the third and fourth seasons.

Adam F. Goldberg and Marc Firek created the comedy. They will executive produce with Doug Robinson. Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios will produce.
