Emmy Predictions 2018 - Who Will and Should Win for Host in a Reality Competition Series?

The nominations are in for The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program.

The Nominees Ranked By Which Host Should Win:
  1. Ellen DeGeneres for NBC's Ellen's Game of Games
  2. Jane Lynch for NBC's Hollywood Game Night
  3. RuPaul Charles for VH1's RuPaul's Drag Race
  4. W. Kamau Bell for CNN's United Shades of America
  5. Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn for Lifetime's Project Runway

First off, it needs to be said that this is the most diverse group of nominees ever in this category and possibly even of the awards this year. It's most notable when it comes to LGBTQ personalities - with four of the six nominees representing. As such, this makes this race very exciting to discuss and speculate over. Like I said with my Reality Competition preview yesterday, my unscripted reality viewing has tapered off in recent years. And yet, there are a few shows here where I have seen a handful of episodes. Ellen's Game of Games is essentially just a spinoff of the games Ellen plays on her syndicated daytime talk show. And yet, she's just such a fabulous and wonderful personality to watch. She is so entertaining and that's why I believe she should win in this race this year. Sure, new shows don't have any track record in this race. But who would want to bet against Ellen DeGeneres?

The Nominees Ranked by Which Host Will Win:
  1. RuPaul Charles for VH1's RuPaul's Drag Race
  2. Ellen DeGeneres for NBC's Ellen's Game of Games
  3. Jane Lynch for NBC's Hollywood Game Night
  4. Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn for Lifetime's Project Runway
  5. W. Kamau Bell for CNN's United Shades of America

The voters in this category do enjoy a fair amount of complacency. They reward people who have won in the past. Jeff Probst won for the first four years the category was in existence. The past four years have only seen two winners - with Jane Lynch and RuPaul Charles each prevailing twice. As such, those two may seem like the favorites to win in this race. RuPaul's Drag Race may not have the strength to prevail for Reality Competition Program but RuPaul has already proven to be a champion here. The voters could easily give him the award for the third consecutive year. But again, I feel like Ellen DeGeneres has the good will amongst the voters to prevail. She has won many Daytime Emmy Awards for her talk show. Those typically aren't held with as much esteem as the Primetime Emmy Awards - for which she has also won once. But it's still a track record that can't be ignored here. Ellen's Game of Games was also the most popular of the shows nominated here. So, the winner could ultimately come from the show with the most public perception. But at the end of the day, many outcomes here would be absolutely satisfying.
