Emmy Predictions 2018 - Which Program Will and Should Win for Structured Reality Series?

The nominations are in for The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Structured Reality Program.

The Nominees Ranked By Which Program Should Win:
  1. Netflix's Queer Eye
  2. HGTV's Fixer Upper
  3. ABC's Shark Tank
  4. TLC's Who Do You Think You?
  5. PBS' Antiques Roadshow
  6. Paramount's Lip Sync Battle

Netflix's new version of Queer Eye was the only program nominated in this category that I made a point of watching this year. No, I still haven't seen every episode because of the demands of covering scripted television. But I've also seen enough to know just how emotional and brilliant it can be. Sure, it still features too many produced segments that are clearly staged and stunted. But the chemistry and structure of the show is really inspiring. Elsewhere, it seems like the nominees are shows that have been on for awhile and just get perennial nominations. Sure, it would be absolutely fantastic if Fixer Upper managed to pull off a win for its final season. That show was a major hit for HGTV with a strong fandom continuing to support it. That's a narrative the voters could get behind as well. Everything else in this category though just doesn't feel all that exciting.

The Nominees Ranked by Which Program Will Win:
  1. ABC's Shark Tank
  2. Netflix's Queer Eye
  3. HGTV's Fixer Upper
  4. Paramount's Lip Sync Battle
  5. PBS' Antiques Roadshow
  6. TLC's Who Do You Think You?

In all likelihood, Shark Tank is going to win here. It is the four-time reigning champion in the category after all. In fact, it's the only one of the nominees to have ever won before. Technically, the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy series won once. But the Netflix version is a different show altogether. That is enough to give it some semblance of a track record though. If Shark Tank doesn't win, then it will more than likely go to Queer Eye and prove that Netflix is now becoming a serious threat in the reality categories. Fixer Upper and Lip Sync Battle could present a case to the voters as well. It just seems like a more daunting climb for them to emerge victorious here - though not impossible. But again, Shark Tank has to be considered the favorite in this race even though its popularity is starting to slip in its old age.
