Emmy Predictions 2018 - Which Program Will and Should Win for Animated Series?

The nominations are in for The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Animated Program

The Nominees Ranked By Which Program Should Win:
  1. Adult Swim's Rick and Morty - "Pickle Rick"
  2. FOX's Bob's Burgers - "V for Valentine-detta"
  3. Disney XD's Big Hero 6: The Series - "Baymax Returns"
  4. Comedy Central's South Park - "Put It Down"
  5. FOX's The Simpsons - "Gone Boy"

The race for animated program is one of the few categories yet to be completely invaded by the streaming services. Of course, it's only a matter of time - especially since all of those platforms are trying to develop the next hit show in animation. It's not like they offer nothing in that regard either. Netflix could have had two serious contenders in this race thanks to BoJack Horseman and Big Mouth. Those snubs are significant. But again, I have to be analyzing the race as it currently is and not by the snubs. This is the first year that Rick and Morty has ever been nominated. And yes, there are certainly significant problems with Adult Swim's largely dude-bro culture that could tarnish an overall great show. There's a reason why it only just now got the nomination. But it would also feel like the most rewarding victory in this category as well. None of the other contenders really feel like they need to be honored in such a way.

The Nominees Ranked by Which Program Will Win:
  1. FOX's Bob's Burgers - "V for Valentine-detta"
  2. FOX's The Simpsons - "Gone Boy"
  3. Adult Swim's Rick and Morty - "Pickle Rick"
  4. Comedy Central's South Park - "Put It Down"
  5. Disney XD's Big Hero 6: The Series - "Baymax Returns"

This category is notable because there are multiple winners once again nominated. In fact, three shows have won in this category multiple times. Bob's Burgers has won twice, South Park has prevailed five times and The Simpsons has been victorious on ten occasions. As such, it's easy to assume that they are the shows the voters love the most. Of those three, the favorite may actually be Bob's Burgers because it won more recently - in 2014 and 2017. South Park hasn't won since 2013 while The Simpsons hasn't won since 2008. Moreover, South Park and The Simpsons may just continue getting nominated out of complacency instead of urgency. Neither of them really drove a lot of buzz or conversation in the last year. I can't say the same for Bob's Burgers either but it at least has a more recent victory. Rick and Morty could pull off an upset. It's just rare that a show wins in this category on its first nomination.
