Emmy Predictions 2018 - Who Will and Should Win for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series?

The nominations are in for The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

The Nominees Ranked By Which Actor Should Win:
  1. Louie Anderson for FX's Baskets - "Thanksgiving"
  2. Henry Winkler for HBO's Barry - "Chapter Four: Commit... to You!"
  3. Brian Tyree Henry for FX's Atlanta - "Woods"
  4. Tony Shalhoub for Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - "Thank You and Good Night"
  5. Kenan Thompson for NBC's Saturday Night Live - "Host: John Mulaney"
  6. Tituss Burgess for Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - "Kimmy and the Beest!"
  7. Alec Baldwin for NBC's Saturday Night Live - "Host: Donald Glover"

Even though he has technically become the co-lead of the show, Louie Anderson continues to deliver one of the best and most inspired performances on all of television. His hurdle with the Emmys every year is simply getting nominated. As long as he continues to make it into the field, he should be considered as the best performer. He is just so tremendous on Baskets. And yet, this category is full of nominees who did such incredible work this year. Henry Winkler played completely against type as a narcissistic acting coach on Barry. He was still absolutely delightful. Meanwhile, Tony Shalhoub fit into an Amy Sherman-Palladino world and manner of speaking phenomenally. And Brian Tyree Henry continued to stun as Atlanta only added onto all of its oddities and unique visual ticks in its second season. The only real disappointment in this race is Alec Baldwin. Early on, his Donald Trump impression was fun. He deserved to win a year ago in this race. And yet, it has simply grown too monotonous. It further proves that the current writers struggle when it comes to political satire. However, it's about damn time that Kenan Thompson has gotten a nomination. He is long overdue for being the rock that essentially holds the show together.

The Nominees Ranked by Which Actor Will Win:
  1. Henry Winkler for HBO's Barry - "Chapter Four: Commit... to You!"
  2. Alec Baldwin for NBC's Saturday Night Live - "Host: Donald Glover"
  3. Tony Shalhoub for Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - "Thank You and Good Night"
  4. Brian Tyree Henry for FX's Atlanta - "Woods"
  5. Louie Anderson for FX's Baskets - "Thanksgiving"
  6. Kenan Thompson for NBC's Saturday Night Live - "Host: John Mulaney"
  7. Tituss Burgess for Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - "Kimmy and the Beest!"

The supporting and guest acting categories could once again be dominated by nominees from Saturday Night Live. That happened a year ago for the first time with Alec Baldwin, Kate McKinnon, Dave Chappelle and Melissa McCarthy winning for the sketch series. And now, multiple nominees continue to battle in these races. It could potentially help both Baldwin and Thompson to victory. But again, it would be so disappointing if Baldwin won again because his one impression just isn't as strong as it once was. It would be more inspiring if Thompson won. That just seems far more unlikely though. In fact, this award could go a number of different ways. The voters could reward the actors who have won before like Anderson, Baldwin or Shalhoub. Or they could reward a veteran in the industry who has somehow never won. This is Winkler's sixth Emmy nomination. It may represent his best chance at winning so far. As such, that feels like a narrative the voters could really enjoy. Or they could also shake things up this year by awarding the prize to some really deserving newcomers. Atlanta could begin a huge comedy sweep if Henry were to prevail in this race. That would indicate even stronger support from the voters. Of course, the same could also be said should Winkler prevail for Barry.
