Emmy Predictions 2018 - Which Program Will and Should Win for Limited Series?

The nominations are in for The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. Next up for analysis is Limited Series.

The Nominees Ranked By Which Program Should Win:
  1. Netflix's Godless
  2. Showtime's Patrick Melrose
  3. FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  4. TNT's The Alienist
  5. National Geographic's Genius: Picasso

This is such a bizarre category mostly because of which shows the Emmys chose to recognize. It's so strange that The Alienist and Genius got in for subpar seasons over the terrific work done on The Looming Tower, Twin Peaks and American Vandal. As such, it's a little more difficult to really narrow down a nominee who should win. This category has seen a revitalization over the last few years thanks to the season-long anthology drama. And yet, this is a weaker year than the category has been in the past. Gianni Versace, Patrick Melrose and Godless are easily the top contenders who should be battling it out for the victory. But there are pros and cons to each of them as well given the material on the screen. I'm giving the edge to Godless simply because it was a nice twist on the Western format even though it didn't trust its premise as much as it should have. Gianni Versace suffers only because it wasn't as breakout brilliant as the O.J. Simpson story. And Patrick Melrose boasted a terrific lead performance and direction but writing that did grew repetitive after awhile.

The Nominees Ranked by Which Program Will Win:
  1. FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
  2. Netflix's Godless
  3. National Geographic's Genius: Picasso
  4. TNT's The Alienist
  5. Showtime's Patrick Melrose

This really is Gianni Versace's category to lose at this point. It's always fascinating to analyze the three big programming categories after the Creative Arts Emmys have been announced. Gianni Versace has already won four Emmys this year. That's more than any of the other nominees in this category. Sure, it may not be as buzzed about as the first season. But it's still impressive and strong enough for Emmy voters. Of course, the surprising detail from this weekend's awards was how much Genius emerged as a series threat - typically to the detriment of Godless. A lot of stories have been written saying that this is going to be a huge year for Netflix. The streaming giant dethroned HBO as the network with the most nominations. It has serious contenders in almost every race. And yet, Godless kept getting defeated and only won in one category. As such, there may not be an upset from what everyone should be predicting in this category this year. Patrick Melrose would be a deserving winner as well. But it didn't win anything so far and doesn't have many nominees during the primetime ceremony. In fact, Gianni Versace still has the potential to rack up a number of additional trophies this year. It just wouldn't be surprising or exciting to talk about if they won in many of the categories.
