OWN Cancels 'Love Is ___' Despite Previous Season 2 Renewal

Despite previously renewing the drama for a second season in July, OWN has today decided to cancel its original drama series Love Is ___ after one season.

The news comes after actress Amber Dixon Brenner filed a lawsuit claiming she was co-creator Salim Akil's longtime girlfriend during his marriage to series showrunner Mara Brock Akil. The actress also made domestic violence allegations against him and that the idea for the show was stolen from her. Production company Warner Bros. conducted an immediate investigation and found no evidence of abuse on the set of the OWN drama. Nevertheless, the lawsuit casts a cloud of suspicion over the semi-autobiographical story of love at the center of the series.

The Akils created the drama, with Mara Brock Akil serving as showrunner for the first season while Salim Akil was the showrunner on The CW's Black Lightning. The CW has not yet made any decisions about whether the lawsuit will impact the future of its drama.

The drama starred Michele Weaver, Will Catlett, Wendy Davis, Clarke Peters, Idara Victor, Tyrone Brown, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing and Kadeem Hardison.
