HBO has today given a series order to the original sketch comedy series A Black Lady Sketch Show created by and starring Robin Thede (The Rundown). An episode count and premiere date window were not immediately announced.
The series will feature narrative sketches performed by a core cast of black women - including Thede - as well as celebrity guests. It is considered the first sketch comedy in TV history to be written by, directed by and starring an array of black women.
Lauren Ashley Smith will serve as head writer and co-executive producer. Executive produces include Thede, Issa Rae, Dave Becky, Jonathan Berry, Tony Hernandez, Brooke Posch, John Skidmore, Deniese Davis and Montrel McKay. Jax Media, 3 Arts Entertainment and Issa Rae Productions will produce.
