Casting News - Alba Baptista to Star in Netflix's 'Warrior Nun'; Matias Varela Joins TNT's 'Raised by Wolves'; Plus 1 More Update!

Casting News - March 18, 2019

ABC's Black-ish; Netflix's Warrior Nun; and TNT's Raised by Wolves.

NETFLIX's WARRIOR NUN
  • Alba Baptista, Toya Turner, Tristan Ulloa, Thekla Reuten, Kristina Tonteri-Young, Lorena Andrea and Emilio Sakraya have been cast on the upcoming drama created by Simon Barry.
  • Baptista (Jogo Duplo) will play Ava, who is tasting freedom for the first time in her young life after being liberated from an abusive orphanage and a prison of her mind and body. As a result, she wants to experience everything at once, and she can be reckless in her ambition.
  • Turner (Incredibles 2) will play Shotgun Mary, a woman loyal to the sisterhood more than the Church. She escaped family tragedy and was raised with religion but never really took to it fully. Naturally, she has a chip on her shoulder about loyalty. All the nuns know they can count on Mary to have their backs.
  • Ulloa (Snatch) will play Father Vincent, the spiritual and strategic leader of the Order of the Cruciform Sword. Behind the Man-of-God persona, he presents a vulnerability that is both disarming and attractive. A veteran of making bad choices, putting on the collar and devoting himself to the Church was trading one addiction for another.
  • Reuten (Beat) will play Jillian Salvius, the CEO of a tech startup who has challenged the Vatican's power directly by making a discovery that could make religion obsolete. They say there's a fine line between genius and obsession though.
  • Tonteri-Young (The Crocodile's Gift) will play Young Sister Beatrice, a woman with a quiet Zen strength. She is a powerful Sister Warrior in her own right. The team's resident strategist, she uses her reserved and intuitive nature to analyze everyone and everything around her.
  • Andrea (Papillon) will play Sister Lilith, born into an elite family, she is a legacy Nun and committed to her beliefs, which causes her to overstep and overreach in her entitlement.
  • Sakraya (4 Blocks) will play JC, the charismatic leader of a group of alluring petty criminals, running their game all over Europe, getting into trouble while robbing the rich and giving to themselves. While most members of the gang are aimless souls, he has real ambition. He has big plans for his life, but for now, he is committed to living in the moments.
TNT's RAISED BY WOLVES
  • Matias Varela will co-star on the upcoming drama starring Travis Fimmel. He previously starred in the third season of Netflix's Narcos.
  • He will play Lucius, a loyal soldier, who is trying to make up for the perceived failings of his father, a man whose sense of kindness and mercy were his ultimate undoing. He is so committed to reversing his father's legacy that he devotes himself to serving the very man who executed him, a man he believes may be a savior to his people.
ABC's BLACK-ISH
  • Anders Holm, Tika Sumpter, Arica Himmel, Gary Cole, Ethan William Childress, Mykal-Michelle Harris and Christina Anthony will appear in an upcoming episode of the comedy's fifth season - which could serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential second spinoff series revolving around Bow's (Tracee Ellis Ross) childhood.
  • Holm (Workaholics) and Sumpter (The Haves and the Have Nots) will play Bow's parents, Paul and Alicia. The characters have been played in the present-day by Beau Bridges and Anna Deavere Smith.
  • Himmel (Before You Know It) will play the young version of Bow.
  • Childress and Harris will play Bow's siblings, Johan and Santamonica. The characters have been played in the present-day by Daveed Diggs and Rashida Jones.
  • Cole (Veep) will play Harrison, Paul's father.
  • Anthony will play Denise, Alicia's sister.
