REVIEW: 'Roswell, New Mexico' - Liz Copes with Her Anger by Spending the Day with Maria and Her Mom in 'I Saw the Sign'

The CW's Roswell, New Mexico - Episode 1.07 "I Saw the Sign"

After uncovering a devastating secret about Rosa's death, Liz takes matters into her own hands to protect herself and those around her. However, her plans are sidelined after a day with Mimi, Maria and Alex leads to a new revelation about Rosa. Max takes aim at Wyatt, while Cameron decides whether she's going to help Sergeant Manes.

In 2018, there were 495 scripted shows airing amongst the linear channels and streaming services. The way people are consuming content now is so different than it used to be. It happens according to one's own schedule. As such, there is less necessity to provide ample coverage of each specific episode in any given season from a show. Moreover, it is simply impossible to watch everything. As such, this site is making the move to shorter episodic reviews in order to cover as many shows as possible. With all of that being said, here are my thoughts on the next episode of The CW's Roswell, New Mexico.

"I Saw the Sign" was written by Miguel Nolla & Christopher Hollier and directed by Paul Wesley

This hour opens with government scientists conducting an autopsy on an alien. It happened in the aftermath of the original Roswell crash. Max, Michael and Isobel have long lived in fear that they would be dissected and experimented on should they ever be discovered. And now, it's clear that the government has already done that and has had over 70 years to research their findings. Sure, that's what makes it impressive that Liz has used the last week since learning that Isobel killed Rosa to create a weapon that can be used against her telepathic abilities. That proves that Liz is a very capable and forward-thinking scientist. She understands this better than anyone else in the area and may actually be a helpful ally to the aliens if there wasn't the whole personal drama happening between them because of Rosa's death. She is still covering for them as well because she can't get the police involved. That would only expose the truth about her own father. She doesn't want her father to be deported. As such, it feels like she can't get any justice in this case. The world continues to believe that Rosa killed two people because she was drunk and high. That wasn't the case at all. Liz is armed with that knowledge and is angry. She is allowing that to fuel all of her actions as well. She lashes out at Isobel because she faced no punishment for this crime whatsoever. Moreover, Max and Michael haven't used the last decade to better understand why this happened in the first place. They are all still completely in the dark. Isobel was shielded from the truth for so long. She doesn't want the men in her life making decisions for her anymore. Her entire world has imploded. She wants to face responsibility. She just doesn't know how. The three of them running away and agreeing to never have any personal connections with anyone wouldn't be a solution. It wouldn't stop Isobel from acting out during a blackout. So instead, she gets sent away on a psych hold. That could provide people with access to better understand her. It allows Noah to come running back after he previously pushed her away. He still doesn't exist all that much as an important character in this story. But he is still being included in all of this even though he doesn't know the truth. Plus, the show is introducing an entirely new aspect to the conspiracy. Maria's mother, Mimi, shows up here. She immediately presents as a senile woman who can't make sense of the world around her. She is more than just a simple alien conspiracy theorist. She presents as having dementia even though no doctor has been able to prove it. Everything comes back inconclusive. And yet, the frequency with which she talks about aliens makes it seem like she does have vital information and isn't just confusing reality with Independence Day starring Will Smith. She mixes up Liz with Rosa time and time again until Liz just chooses to live in that reality. That allows her to imagine the life that Rosa could have lived if she survived Isobel and managed to get clean. Mimi carries all of these secrets. It's just difficult to get the truth out of her. She warns Alex that there is danger ahead in his future. His father is the one leading the charge against the aliens in this town. And now, he knows to be suspicious of Max because of the tip from Cameron. She only has tangential evidence collected from sleeping with him. However, there is a constant symbol that pops up even though people have no control over their actions when drawing it. That too has to mean something important in the grand scheme of things.
