FOX has today renewed its original drama series Empire for a sixth season, to air during the 2019-20 broadcast season. Moreover, the network and studio announced that embattled star Jussie Smollett currently remains unlikely to return to the cast.
The drama stars Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Bryshere Y. Gray, Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, Gabourey Sidibe, Ta'Rhonda Jones, Serayah, Nicole Ari Parker, Andre Royo, Chet Hanks, Rhyon Nicole Brown and A.Z. Kelsey.
Lee Daniels and Danny Strong created the drama. They executive produce with Brent Mahoney, Brian Grazer, Robert Munic, Francie Calfo and Sanaa Hamri. 20th Century Fox Television, Imagine Television, Lee Daniels Entertainment and Danny Strong Productions produce.
In regards to Smollett's future on the drama, Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television released the following statement: "By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett's option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire."
