REVIEW: 'Grey's Anatomy' - Bailey and Catherine's Secret Meeting Has Major Repercussions for the Hospital in 'Drawn to the Blood'

ABC's Grey's Anatomy - Episode 15.24 "Drawn to the Blood"

Alex tries desperately to save his patient Gus while he waits for a severely agoraphobic blood donor to arrive from London. Jo reveals to Meredith why she's been so down. Catherine and Bailey hold a meeting to get down to the bottom of an insurance issue. Maggie and Jackson go camping.

In 2018, there were 495 scripted shows airing amongst the linear channels and streaming services. The way people are consuming content now is so different than it used to be. It happens according to one's own schedule. As such, there is less necessity to provide ample coverage of each specific episode in any given season from a show. Moreover, it is simply impossible to watch everything. As such, this site is making the move to shorter episodic reviews in order to cover as many shows as possible. With all of that being said, here are my thoughts on the next episode of ABC's Grey's Anatomy.

"Drawn to the Blood" was written by Andy Reaser and directed by Kevin McKidd

Well, this episode sure is setting the stage for a dramatic season finale this year. Almost every single character is trapped in some big situation where lives hang in the balance as well as the crucial personal decisions they have to make. It's so moving to watch Meredith finally get Jo to open up about what happened with her birth mother. That conversation that Jo had changed her entire life. It has made her question her own value and worth on this Earth. That's scary. She even admits that she does and doesn't want to stop fighting. Meredith understands that urge. It's great the show can connect it back to the time Meredith almost drowned to death. That informs this dynamic and builds a stronger connection. Of course, the show also leaves the audience worrying about what happened to Jo because Meredith abandoned her to fill Alex in on what's going on and then Andrew did the exact same thing. And yet, Andrew did that because he felt the need to protect Meredith after her insurance fraud scheme comes back to hurt them and the entire hospital. Bailey and Catherine are in a meeting all day with the staff placing bets on what's going on. It's all about this one insurance issue and the repercussions for Meredith trying to take on an unjust system. Andrew professed his love for her. And now, he's showing her through his actions. It's terrifying and will force Meredith to decide on her own feelings for him. She couldn't say "I love you" back to him. She doesn't know how to be vulnerable in that way after Derek died. She is still just opening her heart up to new experiences. But a man is now sacrificing himself to save her and she is incapable of stopping him. However, the fog may do that as well. That appears to be the central disaster that will throw everything into question during the season finale. At least it's an element from nature the show hasn't used before. It can be just as dangerous. Owen and Levi learn that the hard way when they are stuck in traffic with the one woman who can possibly save Gus' life. At times, that story is a little frustrating because the agoraphobic woman is a broad, one-note character. But it does ultimately make sense because she has lived her life in complete fear of dying from any decision that could possibly break her. No one could come save her. She wants to help save Gus. She just doesn't want to compromise her own life to do so. She continues to be en route to the hospital. But travel will be a very interesting issue moving into the season finale. Will it hinder any of the characters' abilities to get to the hospital and make a difference with the various surgeries? Or will it only impact one storyline where Owen and Levi are trapped while Meredith and Alex are in the hyperbolic chamber buying Gus more time? There are other characters out in the world who need to get back to the hospital as well. Will Teddy be able to get there to give birth? Will Maggie and Jackson arrive in time to perform Gus' surgery? Those are the stakes at the moment. This hour does a fine job establishing the tension. It's still funny and amusing as well. But even those moments are laced with potential darkness. Niko feels he has to be serious all the time now. Plus, Teddy confesses her true feelings about Owen to Amelia instead. That love rectangle may be blown completely open in the finale because Owen and Teddy are determined to act on their feelings. It's just unclear who Owen was talking about. Meanwhile, Link asked for clarity from Amelia about what their relationship currently is. Her helping Teddy, Owen and Leo is sure to put things into perspective for her as well.
