From June 10 to June 24, 2019, voting took place for The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. As such, it's fun to look at which actors and shows have the best chances of actually being nominated this year. So, here is how I see the race for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie.
2018 Nominees:
Jessica Biel for USA's The Sinner
Laura Dern for HBO's The Tale
Michelle Dockery for Netflix's Godless
Edie Falco for NBC's Law & Order: True Crime - The Menendez Murders
Regina King for Netflix's Seven Seconds (WINNER)
Sarah Paulson for FX's American Horror Story: Cult
Laura Dern for HBO's The Tale
Michelle Dockery for Netflix's Godless
Edie Falco for NBC's Law & Order: True Crime - The Menendez Murders
Regina King for Netflix's Seven Seconds (WINNER)
Sarah Paulson for FX's American Horror Story: Cult
Just like the race for lead actor in a limited series/TV movie, there are some aspects of this category that are insanely easy to predict. Everyone is working on the assumption that Amy Adams, Patricia Arquette and Michelle Williams will be battling it out for the top prize. Any of them could easily walk home as the winner. They are all tremendous in their roles this past year. The second tier of candidates starts with the nominees who will fill out the remaining slots on the ballot. Because of Arquette's exposure this year, that may actually help Joey King also get nominated for The Act as she delivers a performance that is just as pivotal and powerful. Meanwhile, the rest of the category is truly up for grabs. Julianna Margulies is an Emmy winner. Plus, National Geographic has proven over the last two years that it is capable of getting nominations for its limited series and leading actors. Meanwhile, Niecy Nash has proven to be a favorite amongst some voters and she stars in When They See Us, which has gotten a massive response lately. But there are so many other performers with stories like those who could make it in. Emma Stone, Connie Britton, Marisa Tomei and Wanda Sykes are awards favorites as well. The remainder of this ballot may just be determined by which limited series or movies the voters liked. This could be a nice place to increase the total nominations for those specific shows - or to recognize something that may not get the love elsewhere.
So now, here are the actors most likely to be nominated:
- Patricia Arquette for Showtime's Escape at Dannemora
- Michelle Williams for FX's Fosse/Verdon
- Amy Adams for HBO's Sharp Objects
- Joey King for Hulu's The Act
- Julianna Margulies for National Geographic's The Hot Zone
- Niecy Nash for Netflix's When They See Us
Next are some serious threats that could break into the list:
- Emma Stone for Netflix's Maniac
- Connie Britton for Bravo's Dirty John
- Marisa Tomei and Wanda Sykes for ABC's Live in Front of a Studio Audience: All in the Family and The Jeffersons
- Ruth Wilson for PBS' Mrs. Wilson
- Molly Parker and Paula Malcomson for HBO's Deadwood: The Movie
- Aunjanue Ellis for Netflix's When They See Us
Here are some considerable long-shots:
- Renée Zellweger for Netflix's What/If
- Carla Gugino for Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House
- Florence Pugh for AMC's The Little Drummer Girl
- Geraldine Viswanathan for TBS' Miracle Workers
- Tinashe for FOX's Rent Live
- Isabelle Huppert, Diane Lane, Kathryn Hahn, Marthe Keller, Amanda Peet and Christina Hendricks for Amazon's The Romanoffs
And finally, just some colorful oddities who still have an outside chance:
- Kate Beckinsale for Amazon's The Widow
- Charlotte Hope for Starz's The Spanish Princess
- Olivia Cooke for Amazon's Vanity Fair
- Michaela Coel for Netflix's Black Earth Rising
- Anya Taylor-Joy for PBS' The Miniaturist
