REVIEW: 'Younger' - Liza and Kelsey Deal With the Complications from Quinn Being Their Boss and Author in 'Flush With Love'

TV Land's Younger - Episode 6.02 "Flush With Love"

Liza and Kelsey clash with Quinn, who's walking the line between author and investor. Diana offends Enzo. Lauren throws a gender reveal party for Clare's baby.

In 2018, there were 495 scripted shows airing amongst the linear channels and streaming services. The way people are consuming content now is so different than it used to be. It happens according to one's own schedule. As such, there is less necessity to provide ample coverage of each specific episode in any given season from a show. Moreover, it is simply impossible to watch everything. As such, this site is making the move to shorter episodic reviews in order to cover as many shows as possible. With all of that being said, here are my thoughts on the next episode of TV Land's Younger.

"Flush With Love" was written by Don Roos and directed by Steven Tsuchida

At this point, does the audience want the show to continue stoking the flames of the central love triangle? That has caused so much drama over the past six years. It has been effectively handled in the past. The case could be presented that either Josh or Charles were perfect for Liza. Right now though, it feels like Liza is building a future with Charles while Josh is wrapping his head around parenthood. Those appear to be the paths they are on. But then, why does this episode conclude with that concerning look on Liza's face? It's meant to infer that she may not be as okay with everything as she is projecting to other people. It's the same look that she had at the conclusion of the fifth season in which Charles was glad to give up his job for this relationship. It's one that comes across as troubling and a little unnecessary. Of course, the show is being a little noncommittal with Josh at the moment as well. It wants to immediately throw him into life as a father. It's very heartwarming to see him with his newborn daughter in the hospital. However, the show just seems to be skipping over the question of whether he and Clare have gotten back together. Are they a couple once more or will they just have to figure out how to co-parent? At the moment, he seems to be relying on Liza when it comes to parenting advice instead of Clare. When it comes to Clare, the show mostly just wants it to be outrageous that she is giving birth in the backseat of an Uber and relying on Maggie to coach her through it. That's insane and mostly just drives to that final moment. But again, it's hard to get a solid reading on how the audience should react to all of this. The Team Josh fans are probably eager by the idea that something more could happen with Liza. But that doesn't really seem all that productive at this point. The show should really just commit to the current paths the characters are on because they are all very interesting. Repetition could be deadly to a show as it ages. That is also the case when it comes to the latest fight between Diana and Enzo. The fifth season ended with her rushing to his side when his life was in danger. And now, he once again believes that she is settling for him because no one can meet her too high standards. It's lame and feels like the show has continually told this story with them as a couple. Sure, it addresses that Diana has long had a crush on Charles. But it doesn't really do anything with that. The most refreshing dynamic of this episode comes from Liza and Kelsey clashing with Quinn, who refuses to take any notes over her novel. She sees it as a masterpiece that will be a big success for the company. That's the mentality she has had for all of her business pursuits. As such, it very well could be hugely successful despite such disastrous focus group results. The show sets it up as an ongoing struggle. Sure, it's also explaining why Laura Benanti may not be seen in a major way moving forward with Quinn running for Senate in California. But it also highlights the growing pains that come from Kelsey being in charge. She doesn't know if the advice Liza is giving her is genuine or something mentioned by Charles. Kelsey needs to know that she is the one leading this company and has the full support of her employees with her business strategy. That means Liza establishes a Chinese wall in her relationship regarding her work. But that also extends to whatever Charles is doing with Zane, which remains very secretive. Of course, it too has the potential of uprooting things because Zane is once again eager to restart his romance with Kelsey.
