Kenya Barris Comedy 'Unrelated' to Be Redeveloped at Freeform

Freeform's original comedy series Unrelated from executive producer Kenya Barris will not be moving forward in its current form. The comedy is expected to be redeveloped at the cable network, though the cast has been released to pursue other opportunities.

Ordered straight-to-series in May 2018, the comedy revolved around Jesi and Becca, who go from strangers to sisters when they find out through a genetic testing company that they share the same birth mother.

The cast included Jordin Sparks, Gigi Zumbado, Matt Shively, Kris D. Lofton, Jessika Van and Davi Santos.

The comedy has had some significant problems behind-the-scenes. The series was originally titled Besties with Barris and Ranada Shepard writing the premiere. Barris had to step down as writer after moving from ABC Studios (which produces the series) to Netflix. He continued to be credited as an executive producer and remained very involved in the creative. Casey Johnson and David Windsor came aboard as showrunners for the first season, but were later replaced by Aeysha Carr in the role.

The decision to redevelop the series comes three months after Lauren Corrao was tapped to replace Karey Burke as the head of original programming at Freeform. She has been busy reviewing the slate of programming at the network and making the major decisions about their futures.
