Casting News - August 1, 2019

ABC's Black-ish; BET's Twenties; CBS All Access' The Stand; Netflix's Sweet Magnolias; and USA's The Sinner.

USA's THE SINNER
  • Chris Messina will star opposite Matt Bomer and Bill Pullman in the anthology drama's upcoming third season. He previously starred for four seasons in FOX/Hulu's The Mindy Project and in the HBO limited series Sharp Objects.
  • He will play Nick Haas, Jamie's (Bomer) college friend. A surprise visit years later alters the course of their friendship and their lives.
NETFLIX's SWEET MAGNOLIAS
  • JoAnna Garcia Swisher will play one of the lead roles on the upcoming drama starring Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley. She previously starred for six seasons in The WB's Reba, one season in ABC's Kevin (Probably) Saves the World and in the ABC limited series The Astronaut Wives Club. She has also recurred on ABC's Once Upon a Time and FOX's Pitch.
  • She will play Maddie Townsend, a low-key but resolute, warm and loving woman with a vocabulary like Southern poetry. She finds herself at a crossroads in her life and her best friends are trying desperately to convince her that now is the time for reinvention. She replaces Monica Potter, who was originally cast in the role.
BET's TWENTIES
  • Sean Anderson - known professionally as the rapper Big Sean - will make his acting debut on the upcoming comedy starring Jonica T. Gibbs, Christina Elmore, Gabrielle Graham and Sophina Brown.
  • He will play Tristan, a student in Nia's (Graham) yoga class. He is a bit of a luddite; he doesn't have a cellphone, rejects a lot of modern technology's triumphs, and maybe more of a nut than Nia can handle. In fact, Tristan is not a serial killer who flies under the radar to evade the law, he just believes in leading a natural life without the false dopamine hits that come from selfies and text messages and social media.
ABC's BLACK-ISH
  • Loretta Devine has landed a major recurring role on the comedy's upcoming sixth season. She won an Emmy Award for her guest performance on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. She previously starred for three seasons in NBC's The Carmichael Show and currently stars in Netflix's Family Reunion, which debuted 10 episodes in July and returns for 10 more episodes at a later date. She also recently booked a recurring role on Starz's upcoming drama P-Valley.
  • She will play Lynette, Pops' (Laurence Fishburne) new fiancĂ©e.
CBS ALL ACCESS' THE STAND
  • Amber Heard, Odessa Young and Henry Zaga have joined the cast of the upcoming limited series starring James Marsden. Heard played the female lead opposite Jason Momoa in the DC film Aquaman. Young appeared in the films Assassination Nation and A Million Little Pieces. Zaga currently recurs on Netflix's Trinkets and Hulu's Looking for Alaska.
  • Heard will play Nadine Cross, a deeply conflicted woman who feels the consequences of her actions but is compelled by her allegiance to Randall.
  • Young will play Frannie Goldsmith, a pregnant young woman who recognizes there's evil lurking beyond the Dark Man.
  • Zaga will play Nick Andros, a deaf and mute young man who finds himself in a position of authority when the unthinkable happens.
