Development News - Melissa Leo to Star in 'Blood Relative'; Auden Thornton Boards 'Thirtysomething' Sequel; Plus 5 More Updates!

Development News - February 18, 2020

ABC's Rebel & Thirtysomething(else); The CW's Kung Fu; FOX's Blood Relative; HBO Max's DMZ; NBC's Debris; and Showtime's The Curse.

ABC's THIRTYSOMETHING(ELSE)
  • Auden Thornton has been cast as a series regular on the drama pilot sequel to ABC's thirtysomething. She is currently recurring on NBC's This Is Us.
  • She will play Brittany Weston, the daughter of Elliot (Timothy Busfield) and Nancy Weston (Patricia Wettig). She is smart and passionate with a quiet but wicked sense of humor. She is an empath - in training to be a therapist - who could use a little therapy herself. Determined to be good and inclined to be a peacemaker, she nonetheless has begun to act out in various transgressive ways. At the moment, she's involved in an on-again/off-again relationship with Angelica - with whom she recently broke up but can't seem to stop loving or seeing.
THE CW's KUNG FU
  • Tzi Ma and Kheng Hua Tan will co-star on the drama pilot written by Christina M. Kim. Ma has previously recurred on FOX's 24, USA's Satisfaction, Amazon's The Man in the High Castle and Netflix's Wu Assassins. Tan recurred on Netflix's Marco Polo and appeared in the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians.
  • They will play the young protagonist's father, Jin Chen, and mother, Mei-Li, respectively. They are husband-and-wife restaurateurs whose secrets threaten to destroy their lives just as they deal with the return of their estranged daughter.
HBO MAX's DMZ
  • Freddy Miyares has joined the cast of the drama pilot starring Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt. His casting reunites him with director Ava DuVernay, after starring in her Netflix limited series When They See Us. He recently recurred on the first season of Showtime's The L Word: Generation Q.
  • He will play Skel, the ruthless triggerman of one of the DMZ's most powerful gangs, led by Parco Delgado (Bratt). He is also a talented graffiti artist with a profound passion for art, which serves as his lasting connection to his humanity in a world where survival is predicated on power.
FOX's BLOOD RELATIVE
  • Melissa Leo will topline the drama pilot written by Chris Levinson and James Renner. She won an Academy Award for her supporting performance in the 2010 film The Fighter. She received another Academy Award nomination for the 2008 film Frozen River. She won an Emmy Award for her guest role on FX's Louie. She received additional Emmy nominations for HBO's Mildred Pierce and All the Way.
  • She will play Lou Kelly. With an IQ in the 190s, she wrote the book on genetic genealogy and can trace anyone if she has a viable tissue sample to play with - John and Jane Does, errant husbands, long-lost children, murderers in hiding, anyone with a secret life. But Lou has a habit of burning bridges as she goes. Sarcastic, sardonic, irritable and confrontational, she's the smartest person in the room with no time to explain her methods to average folks. Except her little brother John. It's through working with her brother to solve the toughest of cases that secrets from their past will start to bubble to the surface. Threatening their relationship and their father's legacy as a respected Lieutenant, community leader and all around good guy. And maybe that's exactly what will set Lou free.
SHOWTIME NEW PILOT ORDER
  • THE CURSE (Comedy, Single Camera) - Starring and written by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie. Directed by the Safdie brothers (Uncut Gems). Executive produced by Fielder, Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie. Logline: An alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple who star in Flipanthropy, their troubled HGTV show.
ABC's REBEL

  • She will play Lana, Rebel's (Sagal) former sister-in-law, Cassidy's doting aunt and Benji's (James Lesure) sister - who does not suffer fools gladly. Aware that Ziggie is in a bad place, and inclined to help her niece over the rough patches, Lana is a recovering addict herself. Employed by Rebel as her investigator, she occasionally turns her well-honed sense of scrutiny in Rebel's direction.
NBC's DEBRIS

He is a two-time Tony Award winner for the musicals Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Catch Me If You Can. He also starred for three seasons in Netflix's Bloodline, two seasons in PBS' Mercy Street and in the FX limited series Fosse/Verdon.
  • He will play Craig Maddox, a CIA operative and Bryan's (Tucker) handler who knows where all the bodies are buried.
