Emmy Predictions 2020 - Which Program Will and Should Win for Competition Series?

The nominations have been announced for The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on which shows will and should win in each major category. First up for analysis is Competition Program.

The Nominees Ranked By Which Should Win:
  1. VH1's RuPaul's Drag Race
  2. Netflix's Nailed It!
  3. Bravo's Top Chef
  4. FOX's The Masked Singer
  5. NBC's The Voice

Season 12 of RuPaul's Drag Race succeeded because of the casting. Sure, there was controversy with one contestant having to be edited out. But the rest of the cast was one of the strongest collection of queens the show has brought together so far. That made it an engaging and competitive season that didn't have to rely so much on petty personal drama - though there was some of that too. It was entertaining to watch while bringing joy to the viewers stuck at home this spring. The other nominees spark joy to varying degrees as well. Excitement for The Voice isn't as high as it used to be. It has passed its peak in terms of relevance. But it too cackles with energy when it wants to. Meanwhile, all-star seasons can be hit-or-miss depending on the show but Top Chef once again proved this year that it highlights talent while being a comfortable pleasure. Nailed It is sillier than ever before. That has always been a part of its charm. And finally, The Masked Singer expanded its format this year. It has boomed with viewers. It has left an impact on the culture which could easily translate to an Emmy win even though it can feel a little bloated compared to the other nominees.

The Nominees Ranked by Which Will Win:
  1. VH1's RuPaul's Drag Race
  2. Netflix's Nailed It!
  3. FOX's The Masked Singer
  4. NBC's The Voice
  5. Bravo's Top Chef

RuPaul's Drag Race is the current two-time reigning champions in this category. With the sole exception of Top Chef in 2010, the voters tend to reward the same shows repeatedly here. The Voice was once a dominant presence - racking up four wins overall. It has started to fade somewhat while Drag Race still feels on top with the voters. That's why it should be seen as the frontrunner in this race. The Masked Singer missed out on the field a year ago for its unexpectedly huge first season. It didn't go unnoticed this year by the voters. That support could translate to an immediate win as a sign of growing support for the current big reality staple. Nailed It too has the backing of Netflix - which earned more Emmy nominations this year than any other platform. The voters love Netflix across the board. It being the sole entry in this category could solidify it as a potential spoiler. That would be surprising. Top Chef may have had a bit of a resurgence this year. However, it doesn't seem like enough to say it will be rewarded for the first time in a decade. It's still an honor to get nominated even in a year where there will be no physical ceremony for everyone to get dressed up.
