Development News - Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault Set as The CW's 'Powerpuff Girls'; Plus 3 More Updates!

Development News - March 9, 2021

ABC's Dark Horse & Queens; and The CW's The Powerpuff Girls & Untitled Rothrock/Weir.

ABC's QUEENS
  • Nadine Velazquez will play the fourth co-lead on the drama pilot starring Eve, Brandy and Naturi Naughton. She previously starred for four seasons in NBC's My Name Is Earl and two seasons in History's Six. She has also recurred on FXX's The League, The CW's Hart of Dixie and TNT's Major Crimes.
  • She will play Valeria, better known in the 90s as Puerto Rican rapper, Butter Pecan, the fourth member of the hip-hop group, the Nasty Bitches. She wasn't an original member, added by the groups' manager, Eric, for her effortless star quality. It worked. The ladies catapulted into superstardom with a number-one record and iconic video. Valeria quickly became the face of the group, ruffling the other members' feathers along the way. But she could care less. She's not here for friends, she's here to win. Valeria is an ambitious and ruthless hustler with cunning charm born out of a difficult childhood. Twenty years later, she's the only member of the group still in the limelight. She hosts The Shade - America's top-rated morning talk show. So, Valeria has no reason to reunite with the group when the opportunity arises. However, when her blind ambition trips her up, she considers turning back to the only family she's ever had: the Nasty Bitches.
ABC NEW PILOT ORDER
  • DARK HORSE (Drama) - Based on the Australian drama Total Control. Written by William Jehu Garroutte. Showrun by Jessica Goldberg (The Path, Away). Executive produced by Garroutte, Goldberg, Peter Traugott, Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Rachel Griffiths, Darren Dale and Miranda Dear. Produced by ABC Signature, Universal Television, Keshet Studios and Blackfella Films. Logline: Alex Irving, a passionate Indigenous woman, sets off on an unconventional journey into politics. As she reckons with her own troubled past, she juggles obligations to her family, to her culture and to a political system that's never seen anybody quite like her.
THE CW's THE POWERPUFF GIRLS
  • Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault will star in the drama pilot written by Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier. Bennet previously starred for seven seasons in ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Cameron starred for four seasons in Disney's Liv and Maddie and in Disney's Descendants film franchise. Perrault was recently starring on Broadway in the musical Jagged Little Pill.
  • Bennet will play Blossom Utonium. Although she was a spunky, conscientious, Little-Miss-Perfect child who holds several advanced degrees, her repressed kiddie-superhero trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive. She aims to become a leader again - this time on her own terms.
  • Cameron will play Bubbles Utonium. Her sweet-girl disposition won America's hearts as a child, and she still sparkles as an adult, but her charming exterior belies an unexpected toughness and wit. She's initially more interested in recapturing her fame than saving the world, but she just might surprise us and herself.
  • Perrault will play Buttercup Utonium. She was the rebellious badass of the group in its heyday. More sensitive than her tough exterior suggests, she has spent her adulthood trying to shed her Powerpuff Girl identity and live an anonymous life.
THE CW's UNTITLED ROTHROCK/WEIR PROJECT
  • Caitlin Kinnunen and Bella Ortiz are set as the leads for the drama pilot written by Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir. Kinnunen was nominated for a Tony Award in 2019 for her lead performance in the musical The Prom. Ortiz has previously guest starred on NBC's Chicago Fire.
  • Kinnunen will play Sister Frances, the complacent angel on your shoulder, an impressionable, people-pleasing, young nun who believes in the power of thoughts and prayers. She never breaks the rules - until she meets Sr. Maggie.
  • Ortiz will play Sister Maggie, the daredevil on your shoulder, a radical, millennial nun hellbent on shaking up the power structures of the Catholic Church while being of service to her Brooklyn neighborhood. She can't help but get into trouble, which is why she'll need Sr. Frances.
