Casting News - Keri Russell to Star in 'The Diplomat'; Melissa Fumero Set as Female Lead in 'Blockbuster'; Plus 3 More Updates!

AppleTV+'s The Mosquito Coast; Hulu's Reboot; Netflix's Blockbuster & The Diplomat; and Showtime's The Chi.





NETFLIX's BLOCKBUSTER
  • Melissa Fumero will play the female lead opposite Randall Park in the upcoming comedy created by Vanessa Ramos. She previously starred for eight seasons in FOX/NBC's Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
  • She will play Eliza, a dedicated mother whose marriage to her high school sweetheart is on the rocks. She left Harvard after one semester to start a family and now works at Blockbuster alongside Timmy (Park) as his trusty number two... and maybe more.
NETFLIX's THE DIPLOMAT
  • Keri Russell will star in the upcoming drama created by Debora Cahn. She previously starred for four seasons in The WB's Felicity and six seasons in FX's The Americans.
  • She will play Kate Wyler, a career diplomat. In the midst of an international crisis, she lands a high-profile job she's unsuited for, with tectonic implications for her marriage and her political future.
SHOWTIME's THE CHI
  • Nia Jervier and Carolyn Michelle Smith have booked recurring roles on the drama's upcoming fifth season. Jervier previously recurred on Netflix's Dear White People and BET's Twenties. Smith recurred on Netflix's House of Cards, USA's Colony and OWN's Cherish the Day.
  • Jervier will play Tierra, the poised and polished god-niece of Douda (Curtiss Cook) whom he recruits for a rebranding effort. She knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it, no matter the costs.
  • Smith will play Deja, the new love interest for Shaad (Jason Weaver) who helps him level up in more ways than one.
APPLE TV+'s THE MOSQUITO COAST
  • Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Ariyon Bakare and Ian Hart have joined the drama's upcoming second season as new series regulars. Cordova-Buckley previously starred for three seasons in ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Bakare starred for two seasons in HBO's His Dark Materials. Hart starred for three seasons in Netflix's The Last Kingdom.
  • No details were immediately announced about the characters they will be playing.
HULU's REBOOT
  • Paul Reiser has been cast as a series regular on the upcoming comedy starring Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville and Judy Greer. He previously starred for seven seasons in NBC's Mad About You - which itself was revived as a limited series in 2019 on Spectrum. He also recently starred in the third season of Netflix's Stranger Things and the third season of Netflix's The Kominsky Method.
  • He will play Gordon, the hacky creator of the late '90s sitcom Step Right Up. Reiser replaces Michael McKean, who played the role in the original pilot.
