After months of speculation, Netflix has today officially renewed its original drama series Squid Game for a second season. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teased details of what viewers can expect in the new season.

"A whole new round is coming," said Dong-hyuk. "It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director, and producer of Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show. And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us once more for a whole new round."

The drama - which released its 9-episode first season on September 17, 2021 - is the biggest show to launch on Netflix to date. It's the first Korean series to reach No. 1 in the U.S. series Top 10. Ninety-five percent of Squid Game viewership came from outside Korea. At its peak, it was No. 1 in 94 countries - every country in the world where Netflix has a Top 10 list. It stands as Netflix's most sampled original series ever, having reached 142 million accounts in its first 28 days of release.
