ABC Renews 'Grey's Anatomy' for Season 20

ABC has today renewed its original drama series Grey's Anatomy for a landmark 20th season. Moreover, executive producer Meg Marinis will succeed Krista Vernoff as showrunner for the new season.

The drama stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kelly McCreary, Kim Raver, Jake Borelli, Chris Carmack, Anthony Hill, Alexis Floyd, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Midori Francis, Niko Terho and Scott Speedman.

Pompeo departed the cast as a series regular during the midseason premiere of Season 19. She will return in the upcoming final on May 18. She will continue to provide the voiceover that opens and closes each episode. Beyond that, it's unclear if she will return onscreen in Season 20 though she will also maintain her position as an executive producer.

Moreover, Kelly McCreary recently announced that she will be departing the drama this April after nine seasons as a series regular. Meanwhile, ABC Signature is currently working on new deals for several longtime cast members as well as the new cast additions who joined during the current season.

Marinis joined the medical drama as a writer's production assistant in its third season. She has risen the behind-the-scenes ranks from writers assistant to medical research to executive producer. She's had the latter title for the last four seasons. She has written over 25 episodes of the show.
