ABC Renews '9-1-1' for Season 7 Following FOX Cancellation

In a surprising turn of events, FOX has decided to cancel its original drama series 9-1-1 after six seasons. However, ABC has quickly come in with a seventh season renewal for the drama to air on its network for the 2023-24 broadcast schedule.

The drama stars Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Kenneth Choi, Aisha Hinds, Ryan Guzman, Corinne Massiah, Marcanthonee Jon Reis and Gavin McHugh.

Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear created the drama. They executive produce with Bassett, Krause, Alexis Martin Woodall, John J. Gray, Kristen Reidel and Juan Carlos Coto. 20th Television, Ryan Murphy Television and Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision produce.

While the drama remained the highest-rated scripted series on FOX, the broadcast network had no ownership stake in the series. It was developed at a time when 20th Television was still aligned with the network. However, 20th Television and ABC now reside under the same corporate umbrella. The drama's spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star was developed after that studio sale was finalized. As such, its financials are different than the mothership - resulting in its renewal for a fifth season today.

It was an easy renewal decision from ABC because of the studio alignment and the majority of the cast already having contracts that carry through Season 7. After that, it's unclear if the finances will remain favorable to ABC as costs for scripted dramas tend to balloon the longer they remain on the air.

FOX released the following statement on the cancellation: "It has been an honor to be the founding network of 9-1-1 and we are grateful to Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, together with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Ryan Guzman and the rest of the cast and crew, and 20th Television for delivering such an impactful series to Fox. We wish them well after 9-1-1's final Fox season concludes."

"Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original drams on network television over the last six seasons and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC," added Craig Erwich, President, Disney Television Group. "It's a privilege to keep 9-1-1 in the family with 20th Television producing, and we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air."
