Casting News - Sam Waterston Leaving 'Law & Order' After 400 Episodes While Tony Goldwyn Joins Cast; Plus 4 More Updates!

Casting News - February 2, 2024

AppleTV+'s The Savant; HBO's The Last of Us; NBC's Law & Order; Netflix's A Classic Spy; and Peacock's Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist.

NBC's LAW & ORDER
  • Sam Waterston will depart the cast of the veteran drama in the episode airing on February 22. He has portrayed District Attorney Jack McCoy in over 400 episodes of the drama - now airing its 23rd season. He joined the cast in the fifth season premiere in September 1994. He remained on the drama until its cancellation at Season 20 in May 2010. He then returned in the role when the drama was revived in February 2022. He received three Emmy Award nominations for his performance in 1997, 1999 and 2000.
  • On his decision, Waterston shared: "Greetings, you wonderful people. It's a pleasure to talk directly like this to the backbone of Law & Order's absolutely amazing audience. The time has come for me to move on and take Jack McCoy with me. There's sadness in leaving, but I'm just too curious about what's next. An actor doesn't want to let himself get too comfortable. I'm more grateful to you than I can say. L&O's continuing and amazing long run, along with its astounding come-back, is all thanks to you and Dick Wolf, but for whose vision, patience, perseverance, and unique combination of creative and business talents, none of this would have happened. I feel very blessed. I hope to see you all on the flip side. Thank you, Sam."
  • Furthermore, Tony Goldwyn has been tapped to succeed Waterston as the new district attorney. He joins a cast that includes Hugh Dancy, Mehcad Brooks, Reid Scott, Odelya Halevi and Camryn Manheim. He previously recurred on NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent as a different character. He also starred for seven seasons in ABC's Scandal and appeared in the 2023 film Oppenheimer.
HBO's THE LAST OF US

  • No details were immediately announced about the character she will be playing.
