A missing person flyer draws Margaret into a case about a missing woman with Down Syndrome. Previously missing persons from M&A's old cases resurface. Sir negotiates the terms of his case.
"Missing While Independent" was written by Sonay Hoffman and directed by Nikhil Paniz
For a moment, Gabi feels powerless because she has no leads on any of her cases. Lena is targeting M&A's clients. Carrie didn't fall into the trap Margaret, Jamie and Trent set. And the latest missing person, Diane, remained elusive. Gabi didn't know if she was doing enough to keep everyone safe. As such, she was pushing her loved ones away. She doesn't take time to actually feel these emotions. She's overwhelmed. She can't let it catch up to her. The solution can't be to go to Sir for insight. That eventually happens. Nothing productive comes out of it. It's all about what he expects from the encounter. He helped the FBI. So, he demands Gabi be delivered to him exactly how he has always wanted. He is suddenly detached from every other element of the show. That's striking. Lena is still trying to prove her brother's innocence. She aims to force Gabi's hand by targeting the firm's clients. She demands Gabi issue a statement retracting her story against Sir. Gabi will never do that. Her loved ones try to protect her as best they can. She is still vulnerable. She tangles with forces outside of her control that wish her harm. It's only a matter of time before that catches up to her.

Similarly, Margaret and Jamie can't leave the rest of their family in the dark forever. The flashbacks to Margaret's struggles during Jamie's disappearance stopped being essential several episodes ago. Yet they continue. They don't provide any insight into the current investigation. They don't reveal anything rewarding about the characters either. It's mostly filler content. However, Margaret recognizes the importance of Jamie being able to rely on everyone in his family. Margaret can't be his sole source of support. He grew up with a controlling parental figure. He has turned against Carrie now. He still blamed himself for the despair he caused others. He dealt with suicidal impulses just like Margaret. Coming together has been beneficial for both of them. It's been a struggle too. Answers have finally been provided to questions that have plagued them for years. They are continuing to do good work in their community. It can be too much too. Carrie is furious that Jamie has turned against her. She only returned with the promise of reuniting with her other son. Nicholas didn't know the extent of damage his mother caused. He's empathetic. He has nothing to apologize for. He simply needs to be the bait for the trap that actually gets Carrie. And so, that story reaches its conclusion. Margaret comes forward in the press. She probably should have looped in her family first. The moment of catharsis reached is compelling but a little rushed especially given the presence of her ex-husband to catch her.
Everyone remains on edge because Lena's plot hasn't been foiled yet. She continues to target M&A's clients. Margaret figured out who was next on the hit list. Gabi also sees how Lena targeted the clients Sir never had any sympathy for in the first place. Gabi ascribed motives onto Sir's behavior that were never true. He worked these cases because it allowed him to be close to her once more. It wasn't actually about saving people. That's the same scope of his deal with the FBI. He has complete clarity on that. Gabi is the only thing on his mind. He has operated that way for decades. That's been true ever since she first stepped into his classroom. That was the start of his fixation. Gabi has tried to move on. She has built a successful business. Her reputation is noble. People look to her for help. Yet she strives to be punished for what she did to Sir. She also has doubts about her effectiveness at this job. Whenever a case lingers for too long without answers, she fears she has failed. She will have one more picture to hang in her private closet at home. These thoughts always creep in. At times, they are repetitive. They reveal nothing more about who Gabi is. Her loved ones strive to prevent her from falling back into old patterns. They don't need Sir's help. They are capable of keeping everyone safe. However, Gabi remains the top target. Lena's actions towards her aren't seen. As such, it's a somewhat false premise when Dhan storms into the prison to warn Sir about what will happen if Gabi is harmed in any way.
Lena was Sir's accomplice. As such, it's easy to theorize that Sir knows how to get in contact with her no matter what. She is driven by freeing him. She wants him to forget about Gabi. He can't do that. She tries to force change onto the situation. She's a powerful adversary. The team struggles to believe she could be doing all of this by herself. They thrive by leaning on each other. That support is necessary for them to function. They aren't healed from their past traumas. They still have so much progress to make. They are comforted and aided by those around them. That's how they successfully find many missing people. They deserve to celebrate even while threats remain. Lena is still out there. Yet the M&A team rescues Diane. She and her baby remain healthy. The family comes to realize that anything is possible with the right kind of support system. That's present here. They just have to be willing to embrace it. They can't hide behind some notion of what Diane and Ren are capable of. They shouldn't be held back because they have Down Syndrome. They offer a different perspective of the world. That's refreshing a lot of the time. They can handle a lot of independence. When something goes wrong, that's alarming. The resources exist to keep all of them safe. Gabi and her team offer that. It's a heartwarming ending. One that doesn't detract from everything else going on even though the show is more comfortable with this basic structure instead of escalating the stakes and paying them off in the same episode.
