REVIEW: Apple TV's "The Last Thing He Told Me" - Episode 2.01 "Cape Cod"

Apple TV's The Last Thing He Told Me - Episode 2.01 "Cape Cod"

After five happy years in Los Angeles, Hannah and Bailey find themselves on the run from a familiar threat.

"Cape Cod" was written by Aaron Zelman and directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer

Will Owen ever be able to reunite with Hannah and Bailey? It became impossible when Hannah made a deal with Nicholas for protection. He would keep both of them safe in exchange for getting to spend time with his granddaughter. Hannah and Bailey actually enjoy having somewhere to go for birthdays and holidays. This is a family they've never experienced before. Hannah started feeling uneasy months before Owen showed up at her art show. Everything has been stable for five years. All of this was teased at the conclusion of the first season. Yet by the end of the second season premiere, Hannah and Bailey are back on the run. Multiple potential reasons are offered. It all comes down to the simplest explanation. They were targeted by the Campano crime family the moment Nicholas died. He was the only thing standing between them and death. They were more prepared this time around. Owen kept his secrets. He didn't share his true self with his wife or daughter. He was the only thing that connected them previously. Now, Hannah and Bailey have their own relationship. They treat each other as mother and daughter. It's sweet. It's a reward for all they endured previously. They are in this together. Things have changed. The past has never truly been forgotten. Hannah becomes nervous the moment anyone from the Campano family is seen or mentioned. It's that clear to her.

Bailey still yearns for more clarity about her mother. The family keeps uncovering new photos of her. That introduces more links to explore. Bailey becomes obsessed with connecting with her mother's former best friend, Quinn Favreau. She just happens to be the daughter of the Campano family. Charlie insists she isn't involved with the family business. That's why she works under a different name. That meeting could be enough for the family to consider targeting Bailey once more. The same could be said of Owen making contact with Hannah. It's more than just a way for him to display he still loves her and Bailey. That's all he basically communicates to Hannah. He quickly changes his appearance to disappear once more. It isn't safe for him to reach out like this. However, the narrative actually provides his perspective this season. He continues to surveil the mobster organization that's hunting him. He works at the harbor in Houston to uncover new evidence. He's working with Grady just like he did in the past. Grady's the face Hannah sees when circumstances change once more. It's not reassuring whatsoever. It only indicates that all of this drama is about to stir up yet again.

Risks were taken before Nicholas' death. Those could have been contributing factors to the decision to target Hannah and Bailey. At first, it's unclear who sent the warning text message. Someone was trying to keep Hannah safe before her life was invaded. It was futile. She was attacked. She has the skills to better defend herself now. She's been training. She never felt completely safe. This arrangement was still better than the alternative. It also created a reality where both she and Owen were constantly looking over their shoulders. They were never safe. They fondly recall the memories they shared together. Owen was involved in the effort to get his loved ones to safety. That's what makes the "Cape Cod" message so special. It's also a massive disruption to Hannah and Bailey's lives. They were growing up and moving on. Bailey has her own apartment now. She's in college writing a play. She's introducing her boyfriend to Hannah. Their lives will never be safe until either Owen is dead or every member of the Campano family is arrested. Neither outcome is great. They don't offer any guarantees. The family enjoyed this brief reprieve from the constant drama. That only delayed the inevitable. And now, the show returns to explore the full consequences of the deals made along the way.
