REVIEW: Disney+'s "Daredevil: Born Again" - Episode 2.04 "Gloves Off"

Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again - Episode 2.04 "Gloves Off"

Bullseye adopts a new morning routine. Fisk takes the ring.

"Gloves Off" was written by Chantelle M. Wells and directed by Solvan "Slick" Naim

The narrative took a big creative swing when it debuted last year. Bullseye killed Foggy Nelson. Matt's law partner was suddenly gone. He entered a new world with new allies. He was still trapped in a battle with Wilson Fisk. In fact, everything eventually became the same as before. Matt's fight with morality remained just as intense. He felt pressure to kill Fisk. That's the only way to eliminate this problem for good. He stands firm against it. He needs to believe in another way. That's how he operates. His allies have to adjust. They love him and will do anything for him. Yet they are each tasked with carrying his secret. They don't know how exposed they are for helping him. Daredevil remains a symbol. It's important for Karen to get the story out about Daredevil offering salvation to the city. That's a dangerous endeavor. One where it's risky just getting the message to BB. Just because Matt behaves one way doesn't mean others abide by the same standard. Dex believes he must do something good to atone for Foggy's murder. The episode opens with his morning routine. He trains and makes breakfast for the neighbor's cat. Then, he lures the AVTF into a trap to kill all of them. He makes his presence known. He wants the Mayor to be on edge. He and Vanessa should never feel safe anywhere. They want to take a victory lap. That's impossible. As such, the show makes another big creative decision in the name of advancing this story forward.

Vanessa dies. She was confident about attending the boxing match. Fisk staged it to lure Matt out of hiding. It was the same gym where his father boxed. Instead, Bullseye emerged as the threat. He was determined to kill the person who ordered Foggy's death. That's not what Matt wanted. Fisk even felt indestructible. He knew his opponent wouldn't land a punch on him. He gets to put his violent skills on display. The crowd screams in adoration and horror. It's a brutal fight. One where Fisk shows no mercy. Yet he loses focus when Vanessa enters. She just had a productive meeting with the governor. The person who could disrupt their plans has become comfortable supporting the couple. She had reservations about Fisk. She knew she could count on Vanessa to do what's best. Vanessa was complicit in everything Fisk has done. She was his equal. She needed to believe they could survive this world and be happy elsewhere. She didn't want to think this life ended with her tragic death. That occurred nevertheless. She got off a shot. That disabled Dex. It wasn't enough to stop him. Nor was Fisk's quick action to block the novelty item Dex used as a weapon. Vanessa was struck. She succumbs to her injuries while Daredevil pulls Bullseye out of this situation. All of this threatens to unleash Fisk's rage. He's already been an imposing and unpredictable figure. The city feels the weight of his influence. It could always get worse. That's what this move promises.
