Good American Family is being reimagined as an anthology drama after being originated as a limited series. Hulu has today renewed the series for a second installment - which will focus on the story of Lorena Bobbitt.
The series is now detailed as examining smilingly ordinary families where stories with bizarre elements made headlines around the world and stayed in the tabloids for months and featuring two sides with contradicting accounts of the events. The first season depicted the story of Natalia Grace.
The second installment is inspired by the ripped-from-the-headlines story of Lorena and John Bobbitt, a Virginia couple who incited a media circus that treated trauma as entertainment, launched a thousand dirty jokes and ignited a gender war.
In 1993, Lorena severed John's penis and drove around with it for awhile before throwing it out and calling the police. She explained her actions as triggered by systemic abuse - psychological, physical and sexual - she allegedly had suffered at the hands of her husband.
Series creator Katie Robbins will return as showrunner for the second season. Ellen Pompeo starred in and executive producer the first installment. She will return as executive producer alongside Robbins but isn't expected to appear onscreen. Additional executive producers include Laura Holstein, Sarah Sutherland and Andrew Stearn. Lorena Bobbitt will serve as a consultant. 20th Television and Calamity Jane produce.
