The fight for Ellora reaches its momentous conclusion, but powerful revelations from the past threaten to tear Pavi and Nisha apart.
"The Root Chakra" was written by Chad Quandt and directed by Kenji Ono & Alexandra Chiu
Pavi thought she was abandoned by her parents. It was either because of her disability or because she was the Avatar. In reality, Nisha was the one left behind. Pramodh and Saumya were afraid of her power. She was too dangerous. They wanted to leave in the middle of the night. Nisha woke up. Pavi didn't know what was happening. The sisters ran to be together. They couldn't imagine a world where they were apart. Pramodh pushed them apart. His family needed to run to be safe. Nisha was the threat. He feared what she was capable of doing. That outburst of fear resulted in the Anomaly. Nisha's power is immense. Her actions caused the death of her parents and the lose of Pavi's leg. Moreover, Nisha chose to hide the truth from Pavi. She knew her sister wanted to know what happened to their parents. Pavi didn't want to give up hope. Nisha didn't know all along. She was confronted with the traumatic memory first. She thought she was protecting Pavi by shielding the truth. That only made it worse. Pavi's anger fuels her. It's pretty awe-inspiring too. Once she unlocks her root chakra, she's solely able to save Ellora from the Energy Dome. It's impressive and makes Pavi realize how blocked she still is. She was driven by fear. Pavi found a way to let that go.

It's such a tragic turn of events. The bond between the sisters has been one of the strongest elements of the new show in the franchise. It came with plenty of mysteries. For the first time, there are two Avatars. The possibility has always existed that one could be good while the other is evil. Both have these powers. They can't be afraid to use them. The root chakra is the base of one's spiritual journey because so much is an extension of fear. That came to define this new world. Fear and panic spread following the Cataclysm. The creation of the Seven Havens was the only thing that provided hope. People are terrified of losing that sanctuary. They will do anything to protect it. That quest has run the risk of bringing forth the precise destruction they were trying to avoid. Moreover, people realize just how deep this attachment to a place actually goes. Pavi and Nisha were terrified of being separated. They couldn't imagine leaving their home. Ellora serves as that anchor now. It's in danger. They must do everything to stop the Energy Dome. It's not the only place in danger. The Avatar's duty is to the whole world. Ellora isn't the only Haven deserving of protection.
Pavi feels betrayed. Everything changed once she was discovered as a bender. She was happy living on the streets with rocks as her friends. She didn't want any trouble. She denied who she was. She didn't have to confront it if no one knew. Jae found her. He brought the sisters together. Pavi and Nisha were so happy as a family. They are torn apart now. Their vision of their mother is nothing more than the latest memory prompted by the Anomaly. Pavi presses forward. She won't allow Nisha to deny this part of their past. She believes she can handle it. She can. It just fundamentally changes their relationship for good. Pavi can't believe Nisha was capable of all this destruction. She carries the burden of saving Ellora by herself. She steps forth as the Avatar. She is no longer afraid of what that means. She has a responsibility to act. The Brigade and Faceless are simply charged with evacuating the Haven. They lost precious time because Kayoko was certain she was right. She couldn't admit defeat. The Avatar was the threat. She couldn't see clearly. Karthik is blinded by his need to save Pavi and Nisha. He must trust that the Avatar can handle the Energy Dome. It's their only hope. He must find his resolve within that. He champions Nisha once the crisis has been handled. She prevented the dome from advancing. She saved lives too. She doesn't see it like that. She didn't do what Pavi did. Her sister is the true hero.
Pavi wants to be a better Avatar than Nisha. All season long, she's been fine with Nisha stepping into that role. She didn't have to worry about the responsibility. She doesn't know how she redirected the energy. Karthik wants to understand. Jae actually listens. He's there for Pavi after her whole world has turned upside down. His has been too. He thought being a strong bender for Ellora was the best way to serve. Now, his loyalty resides in the Avatar. He will be there for Pavi no matter what. That means venturing off into the Harshlands to help another Haven in need. Pavi had a vision. She knows where the path ahead leads. She receives that clarity from the former Avatars. Korra lost connection to her past lives during Harmonic Convergence. This finale proves that those bonds are still there. Pavi has the potential to unlock all that history. She must follow her own path. Nisha has to as well. They diverge. They aren't tasked with facing everything together. Pavi has her guidance. Nisha still needs support from Karthik. They thought they could overcome any obstacle together. That requires trust. That is completely gone now. They won't face the future alone. They have friends willing to help. They are willing to fight to preserve what they've built. They're surprised by the choices they make. It's all sound reasoning though. The character's choices make sense given what has occurred this season. And now, Pavi and Nisha will forge ahead in a world that knows the Avatar has returned and for the first time there are two.
