Today's renewal notes that the episode count for both the fifth and sixth seasons will be for 12 episodes - for a grand total of 24. That marks the lowest tally for an individual season of the show so far - with the first featuring 16 episodes and the subsequent three seasons all producing 13 episodes.
Seasons 5 and 6 will be based on material from the fifth and sixth books in Gabaldon's series, The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
The drama currently stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Laura Donnelly, Steven Cree, Richard Rankin, Sophie Skelton, John Bell, David Berry, Lauren Lyle and César Domboy.
Ronald D. Moore developed the drama. He executive produces with Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Matthew B. Roberts and Andy Harries. Sony Pictures Television, Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures produce.
"Fans can rest assured their beloved Claire and Jamie will be back facing new challenges, adversaries and adventures in seasons five and six as we delve into American history and continue the story of the Frasers as they settle in the New World," said Chris Albrecht, CEO, Starz.
