Netflix has today given a series order to a spinoff of the Syfy drama Z Nation called Black Summer. The first season will feature eight episodes and likely debut in 2019.
The drama stars Jaime King (Hart of Dixie) as a mother who is torn from her daughter and embarks upon a harrowing journey, stopping at nothing to find her. Thrust alongside a small group of American refugees, she must brave a hostile new world and make brutal decisions during the most-deadly summer of a zombie apocalypse.
Z Nation's Karl Schaefer and John Hyams created the drama and will serve as co-showrunners. The Asylum will produce.
Syfy has the first-run linear rights to Z Nation which has been a consistent and low-cast original for the cable channel. It returns for its fifth season later this year. Netflix has the streaming rights to the drama.
