REVIEW: 'Cloak & Dagger' - Tandy Explores a New Dimension with Mayhem and Finds Unsettling Memories in 'Rabbit Hold'

Freeform's Cloak & Dagger - Episode 2.04 "Rabbit Hold"

Still on her quest to find out more about the sex trafficking ring, Tandy takes a dangerous trip to find Mayhem, who may have the answers she is looking for. Tyrone's past actions catch up to him and put Adina in harm's way.

In 2018, there were 495 scripted shows airing amongst the linear channels and streaming services. The way people are consuming content now is so different than it used to be. It happens according to one's own schedule. As such, there is less necessity to provide ample coverage of each specific episode in any given season from a show. Moreover, it is simply impossible to watch everything. As such, this site is making the move to shorter episodic reviews in order to cover as many shows as possible. With all of that being said, here are my thoughts on the next episode of Freeform's Cloak & Dagger.

"Rabbit Hold" was written by Joy Kecken & J. Holtham and directed by Amanda Row

Tandy and Tyrone's powers have long had a link between them. This episode explains how they may be two sides of the same coin. They only work in sync with one another. Sure, they still have their individual lives and can use their own powers as much as they like. But when Tandy gives up her powers to go on a journey here, Tyrone also loses his when he could really use them to protect his family. Adina is in danger because Tyrone is recognized by the gang members he just attacked. Tandy, Tyrone and Brigid may have succeeded in busting a sex trafficking ring. So many questions still exist though. They haven't put an end to this criminal enterprise. In fact, this episode notes just how deep the history of the sex trade is in New Orleans. It offers a profound sense of place and despair as this is just the latest iteration of men abusing women in order to build an empire for themselves in this town. Tyrone has been getting more of a history lesson thanks to Evita and her family's knowledge. But he still doesn't know everything. Nor does he know how to stop the latest round of abductions. Tandy is more the central point of that particular story though. She is guided along by Mayhem who is making the argument that no man can be trusted because they all abuse their powers. Tandy may not agree with that assessment because of her connection to Tyrone. He may have kept a secret from her about what happened to Connors. But he's completely in the dark about this new facet of his powers. She is willing to venture into the unknown to save the people condemned to this horrible fate in another dimension. However, she is forced to come face-to-face with her own traumatic past. In the first season, she idolized her father and tried to find justice for him in taking down Roxxon. This season she has been struggling with the realities of her father being an abusive man who tortured her mother. The realization here is that Tandy always knew what was going on in some deep part of her subconscious. She has to see that plainly here even though she has no clue why her life is on display alongside the other girls who have been taken in the city. That makes no sense to her because all of this plays as a realm that only Tyrone has access to at the moment. Connors has been trapped here for months. Mayhem has been here for a few hours and can't find a way to escape. Tandy presents as the key to unlock the mysteries of this place and find a way back to the real world. She gives up her powers to navigate this labyrinth. And yet, her powers in combination with Tyrone's gives her the ability to lead them all to freedom. So yes, that means Connors is on the loose again with Mayhem probably causing more chaos as well. Plus, there's the mystery pertaining to the new criminal in the city. Right now though, the show wants to focus on the bond between mother and son. Adina hopes that Tyrone still has a bright future ahead of him even though she is seeing her son as an adult now. He has had to grow up fast. She still doesn't fully understand him because he can't show off his powers. He doesn't know her fully either because of the mysterious work she is doing. But their connection is still strong and worth fighting to protect. Plus, Tyrone manages to evade capture from both the police and the street gang hunting him down.
