Emmy Predictions 2019 - Which Show Will and Should Win for Competition Program?

The nominations have been announced for The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. So now, it's time to speculate on who will and should win in each major category. First up for analysis is Competition Program.

The Nominees Ranked By Which Should Win:
  1. VH1's RuPaul's Drag Race
  2. Netflix's Nailed It!
  3. NBC's American Ninja Warrior
  4. Bravo's Top Chef
  5. NBC's The Voice
  6. CBS' The Amazing Race

Admittedly, I don't have a strong understanding of the current quality when it comes to the six nominees in this category. Nailed It is the only one I watch shortly after being released on Netflix. That may be disappointing to some because of the great accomplishments being done elsewhere in this genre. It's just the frank reality of my current viewing schedule. RuPaul's Drag Race remains a cultural standard though. It is still the show that drives so much conversation when it is on the air. It took many years to get to that point but the bubble has not burst on what it has managed to achieve just yet. It is still firmly in the pop culture sphere of appreciation and admiration. As such, it would remain very rewarding to see it win again. But it would also be a shocking upset to crown Nailed It as the winner while proving Netflix's further domination in so many categories.

The Nominees Ranked by Which Will Win:
  1. VH1's RuPaul's Drag Race
  2. NBC's The Voice
  3. Netflix's Nailed It!
  4. CBS' The Amazing Race
  5. Bravo's Top Chef
  6. NBC's American Ninja Warrior

RuPaul's Drag Race won for the very first time a year ago on its second ever nomination. It may now come across as a perennial favorite in the category but that wasn't always the case. Conventional wisdom would still give the edge to the reigning champion though. It has proven that it can win. But that could be the argument for a number of other shows as well. The Amazing Race hasn't won since 2014 but it was a dominating force in the field for over a decade. Meanwhile, The Voice had a solid streak going as well with multiple victories. This will be a competitive category. Sure, it's easy to say that every year with every category. But the pundits predicting these results never truly know what's going to happen. The Emmy voters love to shake things up from time to time. Top Chef won once after all. Plus, Nailed It! could easily emerge as the shiny new thing that catches the voters' attention. It didn't get nominated a year ago. But now, it is here and a victory could show that it has no intention of leaving any time soon.
