Just hours after the premium cable network passed on the Naomi Watts-starring Game of Thrones prequel, HBO has announced a straight-to-series order for a new Game of Thrones prequel titled House of the Dragon.
Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the prequel tracks the beginnings and the end of House Targaryen.
Author George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony) created the new drama based on Martin's novel Fire & Blood. Condal will serve as co-showrunner with director Miguel Sapochnik, who will also helm the premiere. All three will executive produce with Vince Gerardis.
"The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories," said Casey Bloys, President of Original Programming, HBO. "We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George."
