'Nancy Drew' Spinoff 'Tom Swift' Ordered to Series at The CW

The CW has today given a series order to the original drama series Tom Swift, a spinoff of the drama Nancy Drew. The drama will join the broadcast network's upcoming 2021-22 schedule.

The character Tom Swift, played by Tian Richards, appeared in a Season 2 episode of Nancy Drew in May. A pilot script was also ordered by the network, which resulted in the straight-to-series pickup today.

The drama follows the serialized adventures of its titular Black, gay, billionaire inventor who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hellbent on stopping him. His missions will require his genius and flair for innovation guided by love, romance, friendship and the mysteries of the universe yet-unsolved.

LeVar Burton voiced Barclay, Tom Swift's steadfast AI companion and tough-love mentor in the Nancy Drew episode. He is expected to continue in the role for the series.

Noga Landau, Melinda Hsu Taylor and Cameron Johnson created the drama. They executive produce with Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Lis Rowinski. CBS Studios and Fake Empire produce.
