Set in 1991 prior to the events of NCIS, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.
Mark Harmon portrayed Leroy Jethro Gibbs for nineteen seasons on CBS' NCIS between September 2003 and October 2021. He will serve as narrator for the prequel series.
David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal developed the drama and will serve as co-showrunners. They will also executive produce with Mark Harmon and his son Sean Harmon. CBS Studios will produce. North and Monreal previously worked together for ten years as writers on NCIS.

NCIS: Origins will join the franchise which currently produces three series for CBS. The broadcast network is currently airing the first season of NCIS: Sydney. Meanwhile, NCIS and NCIS: Hawai'i will return for their 21st and 3rd seasons, respectively, on Monday, February 12. Two spinoffs previously had long runs on CBS - NCIS: Los Angeles aired for 14 seasons while NCIS: New Orleans produced 7 seasons.
