REVIEW: Apple TV's "Shrinking" - Episode 3.03 "D-Day"

Apple TV's Shrinking - Episode 3.03 "D-Day"

Jimmy and Liz show up for Brian and Charlie when Ava goes into labor. Sean reconnects with his ex Marisol.

"D-Day" was written by Bill Posley and directed by Zach Braff

Alice wants to invite her grandfather to her graduation. She's worried how her father will feel about that. Jimmy doesn't have a good relationship with his father. Emmy Award winner Jeff Daniels is suddenly in the family's home as Randy at the top of the episode. Nothing about it was previously introduced. He simply shows up whenever a car show happens to be nearby. That's the only reason he visits his son. They have a shared interest in cars. That's about it. Even with that, Randy questions the color of Jimmy's vehicle. Alice talks about this with Paul. She reverts back to therapy with him on the bench. She feels like a failure because she needs therapy again. Paul will always show up for her. In fact, he relishes getting to work again. He needs to go a week without hallucinations before Julie is comfortable letting him return to the office. He's going stir crazy in the house. He's also facing his own mortality. Alice could stay in this moment forever. That's not going to happen. Everyone lives and everyone dies. Paul feels closer to death. It's difficult facing that fact. In doing so, Paul must be prepared to pass his patients off to someone else. Gaby carries the brunt of that workload. She's making her way with new patients. That includes Alice. Paul even provides a positive spin on it all. Gaby will be much more comfortable talking about sex with Alice. She will be there for her during the next stage of life.

Gaby shows up for Paul too. She confidently walks into his house to pull him out of feeling sorry for himself. All it takes is the miracle of new life for every other concern to fade away. The majority of that plot revolves around Brian and Liz freaking out. They won't let anything take this baby away from them. Ava didn't sign the adoption papers before going into labor. That's mentioned to Jimmy, Liz and Brian beforehand. They can't make this moment about them. They have to guide Ava through this experience. She already felt like a bad person because her mother was criticizing her decision. Brian needed Derek to tell him everything will be okay. That message comes with a caveat. Derek shares more of the intention behind the thought because he's struggling as well. He worries about Matthew. He knows everything will work out how it's suppose to. Brian and Charlie become parents. This moment is right. Brian simply had to trust the universe. Ava was happy with the relationship they forged as a family. The only problem is installing a car seat. That's handled perfectly well by Derek even though he wants Brian to be prepared for everything that's about to come his way.

Meanwhile, Liz is eager for Jimmy to get back out there. He didn't ask Sofi out on a date. He's reluctant to ask Kimmy out as well. She's the only nurse brave enough to face Liz in the delivery room. Moreover, she laughs at Jimmy's jokes when everyone else cringes. Jimmy is seeking something that feels right. He needs Ava to be blatantly obvious about his impossible pursuit of perfection. He just has to get out there. Bad things aren't destined to happen. Being accountable for one's actions is important. Life doesn't have to be as serious as people make it out to be. Marisol blames her prior bad behavior to being a dumb 19-year-old. She's grown since she and Sean last saw each other. The chemistry is still there. Sean has put in the work to become a better person. Marisol doesn't need an apology from him. It's awkward only because she wants to pick things back up where they left off. Sean needs to process that. Summer can't be around when he does so. He has the courage because of the tools provided to him in therapy. He can thank Jimmy, Paul and Gaby. They're all invested in helping him. They need plenty of support too. That culminates in Liz breaking the ice for Jimmy with Kimmy while Gaby invites Paul to participate in celebrating the baby. Holding the baby in his arms is such a precious and heartwarming final moment.
